Since early February, the NHTSA has been actively reviewing the Yoke Steering Wheel once the agency indicated it “can’t determine if the steering wheel also meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. We’ll be reaching out to the automaker for more information. ” Since that time, Tesla has been communicating with all the NHTSA to determine if the Yoke lines up with its own security standards.

Any automobile or gear used with a car that will function on U.S. streets should comply with all the NHTSA’s FMVSS, or Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Tesla and some other automobile company gets the right and ability to determine internally if a car or part of automobile equipment is compliant with the FMVSS, and may use any methods necessary to determine this. Manufacturers can use testing procedures, technology analytics, or conventional testing procedures to determine if or not a car or item of equipment meets the NHTSA’s FMVSS criteria. Finally, that the NHTSA gets the final say, and when a car or item of gear is in violation of some of those FMVSS regulations, then the agency has the ability to act if it sees a reason to think it is noncompliant or has the possibility of causing a safety-related defect.

Tesla unveiled its Yoke steering wheel on January 27th, 2021, through the release of its Q4 2020 Earnings Call Update Letter, once the manufacturer showed updated images of this refreshed Model S interior. Along with several other updates, the most noteworthy and arguably the most discussed feature was the addition of some Yoke steering wheel, giving the Model S a more sporty interior. First glimpses of this Yoke steering wheel were discovered last weekend at The Kilowatts, that revealed the newly-designed wheel inside a Model S inside.

It’s been theorized whether Tesla would have the ability to keep the Yoke design inside its Model S and Model X vehicles. As of now, it seems the NHTSA is still communication with Tesla, but the Yoke hasn’t given the NHTSA a sign that Tesla has committed any noncompliance or safety-related defects with all the new steering wheel layout.

Tesla’s fresh Yoke steering wheel has been approved to be used in many areas, including the United Kingdom and also the Netherlands.
