The Story Of How And Why Three-Wheel ATVs Were Banned



Possibly it’s peculiarity of my age and youth which the ban of three-wheel ATVs (or even ATCs, as Honda called these ) held a type of legendary but mysterious place in my creativity. This ’s it’so gratifying to observe the story laid out in this beautiful movie from FortNine.

Because of growing up in the ‘90s, following all of this had gone down, should you’d asked me concerning three-wheelers as an adult I would have presumed that the ban was a little like when kids tell you that you don’t legally need to go to class if the instructor is over five minutes late.

Turns out, though, I would have been wrong. The ban was quite real and a very good idea. Along with the movie lays out just why.

Even though there is not anything in the three-wheeler’s layout that doesn’t work the way that it was supposed, this ’s a bit like saying that there ’s using Tesla’s Autopilot. Sure, the system functions as designed, however it doesn’t even work as advertised.

The major flaw using all the three-wheeler is the own size. Because it’s O, it needs to be small to permit for your rider’s burden move to serve as a counter-balance. That also meant, though, that it was little enough for kids to reach each of the controls.

Consequently, the ATC turned into popular for young kids whose small size meant they weren’t even heavy sufficient to counterbalance. The vehicles would therefore tip over at low speeds.

As shown by a New York Times article in 1988, three-wheel ATVs were correlated with over 300,000 injuries and 1,000 deaths between 1983 and 1988. So that year, the producers signed a consent decree with the US authorities, effectively finishing the sale of all three-wheelers.

Why did these tippy-by-design vehicles occur in the first place? Apparently, the trouble began when Honda dealers wanted something to market in the winter which wasn’t even unworthy throughout the summer, like a snowmobile.

The response was supposed to take the wheels off an abysmal six-wheeler – that which, in the moment, was called an All Terrain Vehicle – and place it onto a small runabout. The 3 wheel design made it economical, light, and easy.

Designed for farms, it was stable enough for a farmer to operate across their field, mild enough to not get bogged down in the water, and easy enough not to cost an arm and a leg–a bad choice of words, if ever there was one.

Thus, yes. If used just as intended or with a expert sidecar racer, it had been marginally less than fatal. However, as a result of years of advertising and a number of design quirks, in addition to a fundamentally unsteady layout, it was quite dangerous.

Unfortunately, the plan of this consent decree might be equally faulty. The legal document no longer officially bans the selling of tricycles and although producers have continued to stick to it’s just voluntarily at this time.

The vocabulary from the decree also supposed that four-wheel ATVs were also spared the ban. Although they’re much less tricky at low speeds, they’re pretty dangerous.

Based on Motoshark, there have been over 10,000 fatalities related to ATVs between 1982 and 2009. Only 1,000 of these are from three-wheelers and a quarter of all injuries are happening to young riders under the age of 16.
