The Tesla Semi’s 500 kWh battery and Convoy Mode are grossly underestimated

The Tesla Semi might be delayed for quite some time now, but it seems that Elon Musk’s all-electric Class 8 truck will probably be well worth the wait. And as the upcoming truck becoming closer to mass production, it is getting increasingly more evident the Semi’s possible –particularly with regards to its own batteries and FSD attributes –stays underestimated. 

During a recent look at the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Elon Musk disclosed the Semi will be outfitted with a 500 kWh battery package. The Tesla CEO did not specify which variant of this Semi will be fitted with a 500 kWh package, though speculations from the electrical vehicle community imply that the battery will be for your truck’s 300-mile variant. But even though this were the situation, this update provides a glimpse at exactly how much Tesla has come when it comes to its battery technologies.

“You need something in the sequence of probably a 500 kWh package. What we have from the Model S and X is now a 100 kWh package and probably something similar to a 500 kWh package in the Tesla Semi,” Musk said. 

When the Semi premiered in late 2017, Tesla noticed the vehicle would consume less than 2 kWh per mile. Considering the Tesla Semi’s two variants are recorded with 300 and 500 kilometers of scope, estimates pointed to the vehicle using a battery package that’s probably around 600 kWh to 1,000 kWh. Musk’s current update suggests that Tesla has improved its batteries to this level the Semi now needs a more compact battery package to do its 300-mile scope target. This may seem like a minor change, but a more compact battery package presents numerous advantages, such as reduced weight and significant production cost savings. All these contribute to create the 300-mile Tesla Semi a viable and competitive vehicle, especially considering that its estimated $150,000 base cost. 

Needless to say, these advantages only be prominent in case one believes the advantages of Tesla’s structural 4680 battery packs. With structural batteries in place, the Semi could conserve weight and production costs even further. A structural battery can make the Semi more stiff, allowing it to be safer than its first iterations. This goes together with another update on the vehicle that was cited by Tesla, and one that is also widely disregarded or at most underestimated today.

Throughout Tesla’s Q4 FY 2020 earnings telephone, Elon Musk confirmed the Semi might very well be the very first car in the firm ’s lineup that could receive complete autonomy features. This is a point emphasized by Elon Musk and Automotive President Jerome Guillen, who noticed that the FSD hardware around the Semi are the same one used in Tesla’s additional vehicles.
