The Year of the ‘Giga Press’: How Tesla’s monster machines can complete Elon Musk’s 2nd Master Plan

Among the most exciting developments from Tesla eagerly anticipated by the electrical vehicle community is that the organization ’s use of its giant casting machines. Inspired by its maker IDRA as the “Giga Press,” the house-sized monster makers have been capable of producing single-cast bits for Tesla’so vehicles, starting with all the Model Y.

The Giga Press lives up to its name. Its physiological footprint is powerful, measuring 20 meters x 7.5 meters x 6 meters. In addition, it weighs a whopping 430 tons, or about 5 Space Shuttles. So massive is the Giga Press that it takes up to 24 flatbed trucks to transfer its parts.

When operating, the Giga Presses are no slouch, as they have a cycle period of ~80‒90 minutes, that translates into an outcome rate of 40‒45 finished castings each hour, or about ~1,000 castings each day. This ’s 300,000 castings each year, per machine.

A Platoon of Giga Presses

Thus Far, Tesla has put two Giga Presses on the grounds of their Fremont Factory. Flyovers of the website show that the 2 machines have been already set up, though it remains to be observed when they would formally be deployed. Within China, three other Giga Presses have been seen in the Giga Shanghai complicated, although the units were allegedly constructed by LK Machinery, IDRA’s parent company.

But what is rather remarkable is that Tesla has more Giga Presses to be able. Sandy Munro, at a recent meeting with electric vehicle urge Sean Mitchell, noticed that he has heard through the grapevine which Tesla has ordered 11 more units of their Giga Presses. Previous reports stage to Giga Berlin receiving eight of those machines, and flyovers at the Giga Texas website appear to show three isolation pits for its monster machines in the area.

Obviously , the Giga Press is poised to be an integral portion of Tesla’s Gigafactories from now on. As Tesla rolls out of its single-piece throw layout for those vehicles in its lineup, the organization ’s platoon of Giga Press machines will probably play an even larger role. This job will probably become prominent starting a year ago, 2021.

The Year of the Giga Press

Tesla has always been a rebel of sorts, which became incredibly prominent this year. 2020 will probably be known as the year once the world stopped, and automakers suffered profound wounds as a result of pandemic. Tesla, becoming a business that has consistently swum against the current, thrived rather than dropped. It is even poised to finish the year as the new member of the S&P 500.

But 2020 is just the beginning of a brand new chapter at the Tesla narrative. With the business now on more secure footing, the electrical vehicle maker can concentrate on executing its ramp for 2021. This ramp will probably involve Tesla planning to create near, or maybe up to, several million vehicles at one year. This type of ramp will require the entire deployment of its Giga Press machines.

There is not much doubt that Giga Press No.1 and No.2 at the Fremont Factory will be deployed entirely shortly. Giga Press No.3, No.4, and No.5 at Gigafactory Shanghai will probably be operational in early 2021 too. And together with Gigafactory Berlin probably starting Model Y production sometime this past year, there’s a good probability that several of its Giga Presses goes live next year too. These, as well as the supposed machines at the Cybertruck Gigafactory at Texas, should enable Tesla to turn 2021 to the year of the Giga Press
