Even the Ford F-150 is the bestselling car from the U.S., that is why the new electric F-150 Lightning that debuted Wednesday night is indeed important. Not only will it assist ordinary American drivers transition to zero-emissions transport, but in case of a Texas-style infrastructure meltdown, the Lightning could power a house for up to ten days.

And I do mean ordinary American. Ford’s F-150 has been the hottest vehicle from the U.S. for the past 44 decades. Equipped with a crew cab, a 5.5-foot-long mattress, and four-wheel drive, the internal-combustion F-150 begins at $42,500. The electric Lightning is only going to come from the body style, with 4WD. It begins in $41,669. This figure includes the mandatory $1,695 destination fee but no federal or state electric-vehicle incentives.

Ford agents refer to this foundation model as “firm oriented,” indicating that it’ll be targeted by contractors and operators of large-vehicle fleets, however individuals will still be able to purchase it. The automobile may have one electric motor on each axle, making for a total of 426 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque. According to Ford, it ought to have a variety of 230 miles in real-world conditions.

Most motorists who buy this truck for themselves will choose the plusher XLT trim level, that will fetch the Lightning’s price around $54,669, roughly $8,500 over a comparable internal-combustion F-150. Again, this ’s destination however without any federal or state tax incentives.

At the moment, electric vehicles sold by automakers who have generated 200,000 or fewer EVs qualify for a $7,500 federal tax charge. The Biden government is proposing an expansion to all those credits in its own American Jobs Plan, within an $174 billion investment designed “to acquire the EV industry. ” Ford has not yet marketed 200,000 electric vehicles, and so that tax will apply to first sales of their F-150 Lightning, whether or not Biden’s plan is signed into lawenforcement. It’ll bring the price of the commercial-grade Lightning down to $34,169 along with the XLT model to $47,169.

President Biden visited with the Ford factory in Dearborn, Michigan, which will produce the Lightning on Tuesday to promote his new jobs plan. After choosing the electric truck for a twist, he uttered, “This sucker’s rapid ” to news cameras.

The Lightning will also be accessible using an extended-range battery, so great for 300 miles from ordinary driving conditions. Extended-range trucks may also feature stronger motors, resulting in a total of 563 horsepower. All Lightning trucks will have the exact same 775 pound-feet of torque–the most ever packaged in an F-150.

Extended-range Lightnings will also be the quickest F-150’s produced, accelerating from zero to 60 miles per hour in only 4.4 seconds. In contrast, the powerful F-150 Raptor takes 5.2 minutes to reach that rate.

Plugged into a house charger, then the Lightning will automatically detect if your house loses electric power and start providing energy to your own appliances. Assuming an average consumption of 30 kilowatt-hours every day, the extended-range model will be able to fully power your house for three days. Ford says that amount can be increased to up to ten days should you ration power to only essential items, like your fridge.

Day to day, the F-150 Lightning may even help you cut your house energy prices. Plugged to that house charger, it may function as a huge residence battery, charging itself overnight (when energy prices are cheapest ), subsequently providing power to your house throughout the day during peak hours (if energy is more expensive). The Lightning is capable of providing around 9.6 kilowatts of electricity.

Optioned-up versions of the Lightning will feature a 15-inch screen on the dash, through which functions like home power control can be accessed. Other novel features on the electric truck comprise rear suspension. In combination with the under-floor battery pack, which lowers the vehicle ’s center of gravity, that suspension may enhance ride and handling. The battery pack is waterproof and heavily armored.  There’s also a large storage area under the vehicle ’s hood equipped using numerous waterproof power sockets along with a drain plug. This lockable “frunk” may handle up to 400 pounds of freight, extending the Lightning’s usefulness.

The Lightning will even come with a scale on each axle, measuring the quantity of weight you’re towing or hauling. The vehicle will factor those amounts into its range calculations and help you plot a path between charging channels accordingly. Ford’s charging-station system is the biggest available, currently counting 63,000 backpacks nationally, a number that will keep growing.

At 6,500 pounds, the Lightning weighs approximately 1,000 pounds more than equivalent internal-combustion F-150’s. This does take a bite out of just how much weight that you can tow or haul. Maximum payload shrinks from 2,238 pounds onto the gas truck down to 2,000 pounds onto the Lightning. Towing capacity is diminished from an optional 11,300 pounds on the regular F-150 to 10,000 pounds on most of extended-range Lightnings. The Lightning will present a new autonomous hitch-connecting style to the F-150 range–that the truck will automatically reverse to alignment using the trailer. All you’ll need to do is jump out and join with the ball and receiver, chains, and wiring harness.

The Lightning should not have any trouble keeping up using internal-combustion trucks. All-terrain tires along with a locking rear differential will be accessible, and all variations of the Lightning will consist of pre-assembled driveway. It’s uncertain how power will be apportioned between front and back motors, or the way digital traction-management solutions will operate. But Ford pioneered digital off-road-traction technologies on internal-combustion vehicles, so that there ’s no reason to anticipate the Lightning won’t even continue that innovation.

Lightning sales will start from May 2022, and Ford is now accepting $100 deposits for the new automobile. Even the F-150 Lightning’s no price significantly undercuts that of the $112,500 GMC Hummer EV, that will go into production this autumn. Even the Ford’s price is similar to the promised $40,000 starting price of the Tesla Cybertruck, that Elon Musk says will enter production at the end of this season. The Lightning will also be significantly less costly than the Rivian R1T, which the organization says will start at around $70,000 and may reach the first customers as soon as a month.

In contrast to other upcoming electric pickups, the Lightning supplies one more unique characteristic: aside from smoother aerodynamics and a few fancy LED headlights, it seems the same as a standard F-150, that is to say a normal pickup truck. And that’therefore important, because this will be the product which makes electric vehicles a regular part of American lifestyle.
