Thou Shall Not Overpass: Transporter Misjudges Height, Car On Top Gets Smashed

When it comes to car carrier trailers, a double-decker design can allow for greater transport capacity. The downside? It leaves cars vulnerable to the elements, be they natural or man-made.

This completely avoidable incident took place this past weekend in Norwalk, Connecticut. The semi truck packed with automobiles was traveling Northbound on I-95 when all of a sudden it came face to face with an overpass. The encounter didn’t end well for the rear-most car.

The footage comes via dashcam from a car driving supporting the carrier, and shows us the exact moment of impact, in addition to the aftermath. The second it made contact with the overpass, the car was, for lack of a better word, smashed in an of unstoppable force meets immovable object situation.

Usually, these cars are fastened to the ramp floor very well, using chains and tie-down ratchets – that, thankfully, appears to be the case here, otherwise the vehicle would have just flown backwards right into oncoming motorists.

While the semi slows down and begins pulling over to the side of the street, we’re given a really close view of the wreckage as the cammer pushes past. Not only were the columns destroyed and the roof completely demolished, but the chassis looks bent out of shape also. That’ll be another one for the scrap yard, then.
