TikTok 3-Minute Videos Coming To All Creators: What You Need To Know

All TikTok users will soon be able to create videos up to three minutes long, as the app begins allowing everyone on the platform to effectively triple the length of a video post. This will be the second time TikTok has extended the length of videos created in the app, after moving the maximum length from 15 seconds to one minute. This latest increase is yet another move by TikTok to diversify how users interact with the video-sharing platform.

TikTok’s efforts to continuously redefine how users engage with the platform comes in the wake of years of controversy surrounding the app’s position in countries, including the United States. In 2019, the app launched TikTok Live, allowing broadcasters to interact with audiences in real-time. The app has also never ceased to expand on the options available for editing photos and videos with a continuous stream of new filters, effect, and tools.

Since last December, TikTok has allowed select content creators to test three-minute videos, but that’s changing soon. In a press release, TikTok’s product manager Drew Kirchhoff explained that the change is based on user feedback and that the longer video format will allow creators the “canvas to create new or expanded types of content.” Once the new three-minute feature is available, users will receive a notification informing them of the extended length. Speaking of which, the announcement says that three-minute videos will become available to all users in “the coming weeks.”

It is too early to say what the move to three-minute videos means for user interaction on the app, but there are some clear benefits on offer. For example, instead of having to hook users into watching multipart videos on a subject, the extended video run time will alter how creators present and sort a lot more information in an individual video. The impact this would have on the snappy style of current viral TikTok videos cannot be judged until the format is out in the wild but, with the average YouTube video length being roughly ten minutes, the move to three-minute videos does literally shrink one of the key difference between the two apps.

Extended video length is also likely to have an effect on TikTok’s For You page, as viewer retention becomes something creators need to be even more aware of when making slightly longer videos. However, the move will allow creators breathing room when speaking on a subject like cooking or history, even if some of the attention-grabbing urgency is lost. Of course, no user is obligated to start creating longer TikTok videos and the wider community could very well decide that sixty seconds is the optimum length for videos.
