Transport app Citymapper gives up on reinventing the bus

Transport app Citymapper is even admirably inventive, although not all its experiments workout. These days, the company declared it’s shutting its hybrid bus and cab service, formerly known as Smartbus, then SmartRide, and then, only, Ride.

Ride was a perplexing experiment, accessible only in Citymapper’s house town of London. It started with a pair of buses in 2017, which defended paths that the company’s data said were underserved by public transit. Subsequently in 2018it became SmartRide, together with all the buses replaced by eight-seater vans that let them be registered as private hire vehicles rather than buses. At some point, the company added shared cabs to the roster.

Citymapper Ride never made it out of London

These cabs were particularly interesting: similar to UberPool, but with motorists paid a fixed salary instead of a per-ride fee. In anecdotal data collected via this guide ’so called writer, drivers frequently said they preferred this stability into the algorithmic needs of providers like Uber.

In its website article, Citymapper said it would discover these motorists “great areas to work,” but that regulatory constraints and a desire to concentrate on other endeavors meant Ride had to finish.

The other endeavors within this scenario are one: Citymapper Pass. This allows Londoners pay a weekly subscription to access a selection of services such as trains, buses, and bikes. Pass was started earlier this year, and Citymapper states it will soon be adding black cabs and minicabs into the service’s top tier to compensate for the reduction of Ride’s shared taxis.

Of course, Citymapper isn’t the only transport company that’s attempted to reinvent the bus. Lyft and Uber have established comparable services with shared vehicles fixed (or semi-fixed) paths, with no great success. Even Elon Musk was able to envision his own expansive Hyperloop project as a type of public transport carrying shuttles filled with pedestrians. That was before he narrowed his plans both literally and figuratively — to only putting cars in tunnels.

In regards to disrupting city infrastructure, even Citymapper’s plans, also, have diminished in scope, even though its Pass experiment may nevertheless be a triumph. The last day of operations such as Ride is going to be on July 14th.
