Tesla’s Autopilot is a very capable system, however in its present state it can’t, and shouldn’t, be replacing individual drivers. That holds especially true in the case of this episode, where said drivers weren’t of lawful age to acquire a permit, yet asserted there was no difficulty since the car was driving .

The event occurred on March 26 at Palm Coast, Florida just off of State Road 100. According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, officials initially pulled over the Model 3 to driving on the wrong side of the road. Once they pulled the car over, they found not only were the two women inside not just stern (and too young for a permit at the first place), but nobody had been occupying the driver’s seat.

The 14- and – 15-year older women, one at the passenger seat and one at the rear seat, claimed that the Tesla was driving itself during the ordeal. It was afterwards discovered that they’d come all of the way from Charleston, South Carolina – a nearly 350 mile (563 kilometers ) trip – unbeknownst to their parents. And to make matters worse, during the traffic stop, the Model 3 jumped to back itself up into the police cruiser.

Fortunately, they didn’t get off scot-free, since the “driver” obtained a citation for driving with no permit, and both teens had to spend the night in the Florida Department of Children and Family until their parents could get there. While there was no damage done on the police car, the Tesla had been estimated to need roughly $300 in repairs.

It doesn’Regardless of if you’re forcing a ‘smart automobile ’, driving with no permit is still against the law. I am hoping that these kids have learned an invaluable lesson and I am grateful that nobody was hurt and just minimal damage occurred to their vehicle. ”
