Volkswagen is buying credits from Tesla to meet China’s environmental standards: report

Volkswagen may be lauded today as a pioneer in the electric vehicle movement, but the German automaker still seems to need any help in fulfilling China’s strict emissions targets. As indicated recently, a Volkswagen joint venture in China has agreed to buy green car credits out of Tesla in a bid to satisfy up with the nation ’s environmental criteria.

The information was associated with Reuters by three individuals reportedly familiar with the issue. The sources, who chose to stay anonymous because of this bargain ’s private nature, stated that the company that could be purchasing green car credits out of Tesla would be Volkswagen’s joint venture with state-owned Chinese carmaker FAW, called FAW-Volkswagen. This past year, FAW-VW marketed 2.16 million automobiles, the huge majority of those being gasoline-powered sedans and SUVs.

Volkswagen, for its part, has not commented about the current reports. Tesla hasn’t released a statement about its documented bargain with all the German automaker.

China is a gigantic market for automobiles, with over 25 million vehicles sold last year. The nation has adopted a string of aggressive environmental objectives, part of which is a credit score system designed to encourage automakers to create cleaner automobiles. Under the system, carmakers are awarded green credits for making clean automobiles, which could then be offset against negative credits, which are given for making polluting automobiles. Automakers are allowed to get green credits to ensure that they fulfill the nation ’s environmental goals

This seems to have become the situation that Volkswagen has found itself in. Aside from FAW-VW, yet the other Volkswagen venture, this time with SAIC Motor, proved to be among the most negative credit-generating carmakers in China in 2019, as per information from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Thus far, Volkswagen has not announced the amount of green credits it intends to buy from Tesla, though Reuters’ sources declared that FAW-VW’s provide was approximately RMB 3,000 (approximately $456) per credit. This amount is reportedly higher than green credit costs from prior decades.

Volkswagen and Tesla have claimed a friendly rivalry of sorts in the electric car movement, with executives Elon Musk and Herbert Diess keeping close rapport over the years, occasionally defending each other out of criticism. If the current reports out of China are any indicator, but it appears that Volkswagen may be poised to assist Tesla’s financing in a more direct manner too.
