Tesla has expanded its 5-star security evaluation streak to Europe.

In a fresh round of testing, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) given the Model 3 its greatest rating of five stars. It is possible to see a movie of Euro NCAP’s crash test below.

As interesting as it is to see a Tesla Model 3 (or any automobile ) get pummeled in collision tests, knowing what helped push the business ’s safety evaluation so high is far more interesting.

The testing steps four areas: the way the automobile protects adults and children, the way that it treats vulnerable road users like pedestrians and security assist. Tesla has historically achieved high security ratings because of the underlying architecture of the car and its powertrain layout, making the cars more rigid and better protects occupants. The positioning of the battery provides the Model 3 and other Tesla vehicles that a very low center of gravity, which enhances handling and reduces the possibility of a rollover.

The Model 3 gained a 96 percent score for the way that it protects adults and 86% for crash test performance in keeping children safe. It scored a 74 percent for the way the vehicle handles vulnerable road users. That vulnerable road users score is lower than some of the additional 5-star rated vehicles like the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE, Mercedes-Benz B-Class along with also the Skoda Scala.

However, it’s also the security assist score, which rates the conventional security features in the car, in which the Model 3 stands out. Euro NCAP did not test Autopilot, the advanced driver support system which includes adaptive cruise control, can change lanes and retains the car in its lane.

Instead, this evaluation focused on the automobile ’s active security features such as automatic emergency braking system (AEB) or one which prevents drivers from accidentally drifting into the next lane. The Tesla Model 3 earned the maximum safety assist score awarded by Euro NCAP beneath its newer 2018-2019 testing protocols.

Tesla improved its AEB platform to all Model S, Model X and Model 3 vehicles built since October 2016 via an over-the-air software update made earlier this season. Tesla also rolled out other fresh features in May such as lane departure avoidance and emergency lane departure avoidance.

The company’s engineers used data collected from the sensor package of every Tesla produced since October 2016 along with inputs from drivers to find a better knowledge of how folks behave behind the wheel, based on Tesla. That data was used to build more precise prediction models, which then, enable the features to significantly mitigate or avoid accidents.

The Model 3 is not the only vehicle to make a 5-star rating from Euro NCAP. The Audi e-tron, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen T-Cross, Mazda 3, Kia Ceed, along with Lexus UX are a number of the additional 2019 models that earned five stars.
