Porsche’s track-focused 911 GT2 RS just set a new production car lap record at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, covering the 2.54 mile (4.08 km) course in only 1:24.88 minutes.
“We are thrilled to place the production car lap record at this iconic track located only 60 miles from our U.S. headquarters in Atlanta – a track that holds a lot of great memories for Porsche, such as the overall victory with the 911 RSR in Petit Le Mans in 2015,” stated Porsche North America CEO, Klaus Zellmer.
Driving the GT2 RS were 24 Hours of Daytona and Le Mans class winner David Donohue, in addition to Porsche factory driver Randy Pobst, the latter ultimately setting the fastest lap. Pobst and the GT2 RS also set production car lap records at Weather Tech Raceway Laguna Seca and Willow Springs International Raceway last year.
Following in the GT2 RS’ footsteps was its GT3 RS, which also lapped Road Atlanta extremely quickly, putting a period of 1:26.24 minutes. Both cars were equipped with road-legal Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R N0 tires.
“It was an unbelievable experience. The traction coming out of a corner, the tireless brakes, the grip generated by the downforce and the tires, not to mention the enormous power made it possible. The 911 GT2 RS is not merely very capable, but also very approachable,” said Donohue.
Pobst added that “even for a professional driver, enormous power could be intimidating. But when I drive the GT2 RS, the gigantic torque feels completely under my control, so usable, because the car is extremely well-balanced. It is very confidence inspiring, a pleasure. ”
