Conan O’Brien Discusses the Late Norm Macdonald

Norm Macdonald passed away this week, and the news was met with stunned reaction from the comedy community. There have been many, many articles about Macdonald’s career written in the short time since his death, and just as many curated lists of his best clips on YouTube. A lot of those clips are from episodes of the various late night shows hosted by Conan O’Brien over the years. Macdonald has appeared on O’Brien’s shows since his early days at Late Night on NBC, and the two are inextricably linked. O’Brien released a special episode of his podcast this week where he sat down with longtime sidekick Andy Richter and producer Frank Smiley about their unique experiences with Macdonald over the years, and attempted to put a finger on what it was that made him so special. It’s a great listen for fans of Macdonald and of comedy in general, and is a great supplement to the endlessly hilarious appearances themselves, which thankfully live on forever thanks to the magic of the internet. IWC Takes The Big Pilot On Tour With Traveling Exhibition

Fans of the IWC Big Pilot, mark your calendars: the Big Pilot Roadshow could well be coming to a city near you. The traveling celebration of the iconic pilot’s watch begins in Los Angeles later this month, and promises to teach fans of the Big Pilot and IWC about the tech behind their latest watches, while giving the public an opportunity to interact with the newest pieces in IWC’s collection. The exhibition space itself is also quite cool, and has been designed to look like a shipping container. These Big Pilot events are free and open to the public, but appointments are encouraged. Revisiting the Soundtrack of “Drive” 10 Years Later

RICHARD FOREMAN JR SMPSP via Variety

Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive is ten years old this year, and there are a whole bunch of things about the film that could be considered “iconic.” The scorpion jacket worn by star Ryan Gosling, for instance, or the incredible and unexpected performance from Albert Brooks, who was robbed of an Academy Award nomination for his villainous turn as mobster Bernie Rose, the movie’s chief antagonist. But for many, besides the film itself, it’s the soundtrack that is Drive’s most enduring legacy. Variety took a look back at the music of Drive this week with Johnny Jewel and Cliff Martinez, the main creative forces behind the film’s sound. It’s impossible to imagine what kind of impact this movie would have had on viewers without some of the key musical cues, particularly in the film’s incredible opening sequence, so it’s fascinating to hear Jewel and Martinez reflect on how it all came together ten years later.

New Electric Vehicle, Lucid Air Pushes The Envelope With 520 Mile Range

A new manufacturer in the electric-vehicle space, Lucid Motors, has just revealed range estimates for their premier offering, the Air, which it hopes to begin deliveries of later this year. The figures raised eyebrows as they handily eclipse those of Tesla’s sedan, the Model S. The Air will be offered in three configurations, and depending on your wheel size and trim choice, you can get up to 520 miles worth of range, about a 100 miles more than the Tesla. Prices range from just south of $80k to nearly $170k, placing the car firmly on the premium end of the spectrum. But hey, progress is progress. More from Jalopnik.

Vintage Rolex Deep Sea Special Heading To Auction

Seeing crazy rare and crazy expensive watches head to auction is nothing new these days, but the upcoming Phillips auction features something a bit outside of the ordinary. The watch is an original Rolex Deep Sea Special, a watch that paved the way for the Submariner and Sea-Dweller as we know them today, and cemented the brand’s tool watch chops back in the early ‘50s. The watch was put to the ultimate test when, in 1960, it was strapped to the exterior of the Trieste as it made its historic descent to the bottom of the Marianas Trench some 10,916 meters (35,814 ft) below the surface (a move recreated by James Cameron in 2012). The watch, which is rather unconventional in its design, survived and became the ultimate badge of honor for the oyster case. This was an engineering exercise and the watch was never made available for public purchase, and seeing examples trade hands is exceedingly rare. This example is the two-tone construction and dates to 1965, and while it’s not the best everyday companion, it’s got a hell of a story to tell.

eBay Finds: Vintage Wakmann

Credit: amberscott9

It’s been said that chronographs are like fine wine, they only get better with age. How can you argue with that? Take a look at this gorgeous circa early 1950’s Wakmann chrono…..it just oozes style. Nice bone white dial with lume Arabic numerals and dual register chronograph sub dials. The dial is clean and the lume has a really nice patina. The blued hour and minute hands are blued steel with matching lume fill. The chrome plated case shows some pitting, but that’s not unusual for these types of cases. The Landeron manual wind movement is clean and seller states it has been recently serviced. This is a nice vintage chronograph that shouldn’t break the bank.
