We Drive and Drift the 2022 VW Golf R Hot Hatch

Drifting a Volkswagen Golf is weird. Like, really bizarre. The Golf has burst through seven previous generations as a beacon of front-wheel-drive–along with also FWD-based aerodynamic drive–superiority, but obtaining its rear end to swing way out wide typically meant yanking a handbrake or getting struck by a dump truck. But now the most popular version of the MkVIII Golf, the 2022 VW Golf R, will do proper power-on tank slappers, happily drift at a circle, also sashay its way through a slalom. Plus it’s still a front-driver at its core. Huh?

Credit the new 4Motion all-wheel-drive setup normal on the R, which headset its predecessors ’s Haldex center differential in favor of a 50/50 torque-splitting power takeoff plus a torque-vectoring electromechanical rear axle. The latter applies clutch packs over the axle shafts to ship around 100% of the incoming torque to the outside rear wheel. Also key in the Golf R’s newfound ability is the software activated by means of a interesting small button ldquo;Drift. ” A sub-selection of the carryover Race manner, Drift controls the stability control and differential algorithm to permit for the sort of lurid sideways action we happily provoked at a winter testing facility in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Our driveway of the new VW Golf R was supposed to happen on packed ice and snow hockey, but a traditional Michigan fictitious spring brought rain and temperatures that decreased the frozen substance into a slushy mixture wherever it hadn’t been outright eliminated. We still came away with a fantastic comprehension of the R’s capabilities. The trick rear wind isn’t only for low-mu decks, naturally –it mitigates understeer and helps the car hold your planned line on sidewalk, too.

Time spent beating the Golf R onto a wet nevertheless high-grip concrete skidpad confirmed the differential’s capability; it provides the car a mash-it-and-forget-it ability that lets you employ enormous gobs of electricity early when leaving corners without any ill results.

The former Comfort, Sport, and Individual chassis modes are also included, but a new program dubbed “Special” is still another addition beneath Race. It puts the car to the perfect configuration to tackle the Nürburgring Nordschleife and turns the Golf R’s screen accents green. (Green Hell, do it?) Though the setting sounds a bit contrived–and not particularly relevant to anybody not near the famous track–the MkVIII R turned into a lap of seven minutes, 51 seconds at the ’Ring, 19 seconds faster than the prior Golf R, so we’ll allow VW thump its chest here. We pressed the button and will affirm it triggers, but an evaluation of its effects will need to occur at a location not awash in a chilly slurry.

The front brake discs are cross-drilled and an inch larger than before, plus they’re obscured by two-piston calipers. They feel powerful, and VW’s guarantee of a confident pedal with a short, easily modulated stroke held up to examination. Cycling throughout the Golf R’s embryo modes provides a noticeable distinction in steering , with the exact moderate quantity of tactility coming through in every step. The engine is the familiar EA888 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder from earlier, but it makes a stout 315 hp at 6,500 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. It feels eager and may force the 2022 Golf R into 60 mph somewhere in the neighborhood of 4.7 minutes, based on VW.

The North American 2022 Golf R can probably come only one way when it arrives in the fourth quarter of this season: fully loaded with leather, a heated steering wheel, and much more. At an estimated cost of $41,000, it’s basically identical to a top-spec European version down to its silver mirror caps, save for 15 fewer lb-ft of torque (attribute our fuel grade ), the fitment of orange reflectors, no matrix ability for your LED headlamps, also marginally different LED taillamps. We obtained ’t even be supplied the €3,800 ($4,500) titanium Akropovič exhaust that was around the R we drove, and it is for the moment reserved for Continental clients. Perhaps see if you have a long-lost Slovenian cousin to hook you up–the exhaust is maniacal, serving down fat blats on a shredding buzzsaw notice under power, a perfect accompaniment to the new R’s much more competitive visuals.

North Americans may, however, be provided one feature refused to the rest of the planet: a normal six-speed manual transmission, which is remarkably welcome even if it has a further fall in torque, to 280 lb-ft. Even a whip-quick seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic is optional, and exterior color will be the sole choice facing potential R recruits.

We didn’t even have enough time with the brand new Golf R to split too many hairs, but we weren’t even shirts with the touch-sensitive audio volume and HVAC temperature sliders, or even the haptic capacitive controls over the steering wheel. Such controllers look future-cool, but regular buttons are somewhat more reliably responsive and easier to operate, so that they stay our taste. The infotainment screen was a bit slow in reacting to some controls, too, a longtime VW difficulty that seemingly persists. On the other hand, both the R’therefore interior is fine and of a high quality, its well-bolstered sport seats are comfortable and supportive, and the images on the vast quantity of digital property are crisp and easy to browse.

As the Volkswagen faithful know, we won’t even be getting the normal eighth-generation Golf at America, only this hellacious R along with its GTI stablemate. While we’re thankful to get VW’s hot hatches once more, this early experience in the 2022 VW Golf R proves the excellence baked to the fundamental MkVIII Golf bones, making its absence from our beaches even more unfortunate. If you want us, we’ll be looking for more time at the Golf R so we are able to work throughout our disappointment at the center of a wicked drift.
