Wondering about getting a job at SpaceX? Elon Musk says innovation is the main criterion

In an extensive discussion at the Air Warfare Symposium held from the U.S. Air Force, Elon Musk touched on some old and new themes, but one highlight of the discussion was the little window in to hiring and firing practices at SpaceX — arguably among the world’s most demanding engineering businesses. 

The company prides itself and, into the interview process , that apparently extends for its chief executive officer.

“[When we] meeting folks we request some evidence of ability that includes ”, invention states Musk. “At the meeting point we select for new folks that wish to create new technology. ”

It s an bullet point on the firm ’ s practices, although the mercurial chief executive didn ’ t elaborate on what proof of innovation looks like or in an applicant ’ s previous work.

And the emphasis on invention extends progress decisions, into the firm ’ s incentive arrangement and finally a person will stay at the company, Musk said.

“Incentive construction is set up that innovation is honored and making mistakes along the way but failure to attempt and innovate has a punishment,” Musk said. “You will be fired. ”

It’s not only a failure to innovate, but based on Musk. They will no more be at the company, In case the employee ’ s “ creations ambitions are not so great. ”

This emphasis on innovation is essential for countries and businesses to stay ahead of their competition. Musk said he doesn’t necessarily worry about intellectual property theft at either Tesla or SpaceX because the companies are developing technologies that are three or more years before the competition.

“The manner in which you achieve by innovating quickly enough, intellectual property security is,” states Musk. “Speed of creation is really all what matters. I really do say this to my teams. Innovation per-year is what matters. ”

Though a firm like IBM, using a massive patent portfolio along with tens of thousands of innovations locked in its lab could take issue with the opinion, Musk states that his purpose extends to companies, but to too.

Especially, Musk mentioned the need for innovation if the U.S. is going to compete effectively against China, a country that could have an economy twice to three-times the magnitude of the United States in the next few years.

“The basis of warfare would be economics,” Musk said. “If you possess half of the sources of the counterparty then you are actual revolutionary because [otherwise] we’re likely to shed … The U.S. will probably be, militarily, next. ”
