In this short game of life, why not grant yourself exceptions that are great? To disdain the popular prejudices and virtues of our time. To form ourselves, to choose our own values for me personally, and also to cultivate ourselves to something new.
In praise of American exceptionalism
One of my best windfalls to have occurred to me personally was born in America, and grown up in America. Too frequently I hear Europeans (or some other countries ) sneer at Americans and state:
You all think you’re so exceptional (as if this were a bad thing, or even a vice).
But allow us to think about all popular culture, music, styles, apparatus (Apple, iPhone) and cars (Tesla). They are all the manifestation of American culture and ideology– theories of individualism, individuation (becoming a human ), and also being exceptional.
You are exceptional.
Consider: there is nobody on earth out there like you. Nobody on earth which has the identical DNA as you, or even exactly the same life experiences. You are the amalgamation of all of the randomness, chaos and chance which has befallen on you, as well as a mix of your interests, attempts, and self-determinations.
Why *not* be outstanding?
Much of Christian morality we’re taught:
To outshine the others is a vice.
One must be dim, rather than stand out too much, because of its fear of earning others ‘feel bad’ regarding themselves.
Shallow exceptionalism
Critique of American individualism:
Much of the individualism is pseudo-individualism; predicated on consumerist practices and purchasing behaviours, rather than real behavioral or mental/philosophical differences.
Even in more recent times, lifestyle only ends up becoming another purchasable consumer good.
Thus the aim here would be:
Deep, true, individualism … where you pride yourself on being different — not only in relation to everything you purchase, use, or how you live, but the way you think, act, and your (private) virtues you try towards!
