A few of the celebrities of YouTube’s beauty content community, such as Alissa Ashley and NikkieTutorials, have a strong stance against people posting images of these representing the Black Lives Matter movement. The trend has both sides of this debate feeling as the other is being disrespectful.
YouTube’s cosmetics community is one of the bizarre things no one expected to exist once interpersonal networking and user-generated content took off, but it’s also amazing. Amateur makeup artists are now utilizing the platform to make looks for the intent of creating them. It’s turned cosmetics into a real kind of expression. With the biggest story in America right now being the country’s response to the murder of George Floyd in the control of former police officer Derek Chauvin, some of those artists have elected to utilize their talents to represent their feelings about that tragedy by posting images of these overburdened as authorities brutality victims.

It has sparked a debate about Twitter, as Alissa Ashley, NikkieTutorials, and other prominent voices in the beauty content production space have condemned these images. Nikkie referred to the images as”disrespectful and low” in a tweet, even while inviting people to encourage Black Lives Matter through donating and other ways. Alissa Ashley has also been outspoken about the matter, engaging the community’s replies and explaining that this is not an chance to flip people’s sorrow.
While we ought to at least be thankful this is not the typical Twitter debate about police brutality, it’s still a legitimate matter. From the perspective of the people posting these images, they’re using their art to share their feelings of something that affects them. For them, painting a dying man’s final words on their faces is a way to show solidarity with protesters outraged about police brutality, and discussing the images increases consciousness.
To people like the above YouTube founders, there are better ways that the series solidarity than sporting makeup that provides a person the appearance of being a victim of police violence. Alissa Ashley appears to take the stance that basically cosplaying as a black individual is not helping the situation. The answer that people should be free to share their pain in any manner they choose also runs counter to the concept of encouraging the Black community ; if the steps to help the movement are laid bare — petitions, protests, contributions, etc. — actively deciding to take a task the neighborhood is right arguing against signifies ignoring the people you’re supporting. Additionally, it opens to door to people using the imagery that is striking .
It’s a challenging point to argue as it means telling people their great goals and artistic expression are making things worse. Nobody would like to hear that about a day that is fantastic and in that condemnation hits even harder. But, thinking about the audience a part of becoming active on social media. It should not come as a surprise that vision and blood aimed in the appearance would be frowned upon.
