A Porsche Taycan Just Set A New EV Cannonball Run Record

A team of journalists has only set a new album for driving across the US. The team took a Porsche Taycan from New York to California from 44:25:59.

The direct driver, Kyle Conner, is the same one who put the previous record, in a Tesla Model 3 Long Range. Together with Drew Peterson and Tijmen Schreur, the team ran the Taycan round the Nation at an average speed of 64 mph.

The record isn’t simply impressive to get out and out speed, however. One of the main benefits that Tesla still has in these kinds of documents is its charging network. Having had longer to establish its network, motorists have significantly more options in regards to charging places.

Porsche’s network, however, set up with Electrify America, is apparently good enough to get a car across the nation. The Taycan’s mapping applications, also, might have been great were it to get a bug.

That bug, curiously, determined that the Taycan was in Ohio, regardless of its actual site. That made it tough to find chargers, so the team was forced to break out the folding maps (by which, naturally, I mean phones) and get their own way.

The map glitch made other issues, however. One of those motives the Taycan could be charged from 5 to 80% battery in only 22.5 minutes is due to its preconditioners. These hot the batteries since the car approaches a charging channel to have it prepared to bill as quickly as possible immediately.

It’s also worth noting that charging doesn’t happen at precisely the same speed. Charging a battery becomes tough the fuller it receives. As a result, charging a battery from 90 to 100 percent would require longer than charging from 20-30%.

Trying to compute the length of time you should be charging between ceases, then, becomes a delicate balancing act. You have to quantify range stress against time anxiety.

However, the team seems to have figured it all out, getting the Taycan, using its lower scale and bigger charging network across the US within an hour quicker than the Model 3 that came before this, arriving at the destination over the day of New Years Day.

Not a great way to ring in the New Year.
