Apple & Hyundai Close To ‘No Driver’ Fully Autonomous Car Deal

An Apple Car around the streets within the next few years now appears much more likely, following a fresh report that Apple and Hyundai/Kia are close to finding a deal. Within the last couple of weeks, the speculation surrounding Apple moving into the car market has intensified, but this appears to be as near a confirmation of Apple’s purpose as possible, without the company issuing an announcement.

Apple Car rumors have circulated for some time, but the frequency and detail began to rise in December when a statement suggested one can arrive as early as 2024. While there had been some debate on whether Apple would go it alone or partner with a car-maker, several reports appeared to indicate a partnership with Hyundai or Kia (possessed by Hyundai) had been the most probable result.

Now, according to a different CNBC report, Apple is as close as it has to agreeing terms and also assigning a deal that can effectively incorporate both Hyundai and Kia. According to sources reportedly knowledgeable about the matter, the deal would see the Apple Car being fabricated in West Point, Georgia at Kia’s assembly plant. On the other hand, the record goes on to offer additional details on what the deal may seem like, if it will close as today expected.

Regardless of what appears to be a confirmation that a deal is about to be performed between Apple and Hyundai, the record seems to offer some additional context on what the market can expect. To start out with, there’s the obvious hint that the Apple Car is being assembled with the intention of it being completely autonomous. In other words, it is being designed without a driver in mind, making their use as delivery vehicles or robotaxis all the more probable. This would make Apple’s approach more like Google’s Waymo than Tesla’s self-driving Model lineup, at least to begin with.

Moreover, the record also adds more context into the expected time-line. Previous reports have waivered on this stage with the general suggestion being the very first Apple Car could arrive anytime between 2024 and 2028. On the other hand, the newest from CNBC is the earlier year is the more likely, with the expectation the Apple Car will go into manufacturing in 2024. This manufacturing date is tentative and subject to being pushed backwards somewhat, depending upon what happens between now and then. Also of note, the research indicates that any deal with Hyundai may not be exclusive, even with Apple seemingly entertaining the concept of cooperating with over 1 car-maker to help further its autonomous automobile ambitions.
