Chinese City Becomes First To Launch Fully Driverless Taxis On Public Roads

Self-driving cars are intended to be the future of traveling, but the problem is, at the moment not a lot are actually driverless.

Big companies like Tesla and Waymo have all been pushing against sovereign driving technology forward in the US, but generally, vehicles capable of self-driving aren’t really legally allowed on public streets yet unless there’s a driver there ready to take over.

But there are signs that fully-driverless cars could be moving closer to reality. On Thursday, AutoX, a Shenzhen-based robotaxi company, announced it has been granted permission to operate on town ’s public streets, even with no security driver.

The startup, which is endorsed by Chinese retail giant Alibaba, states its fleet of 25 vehicles will be allowed to drive round unrestricted, which makes them the first company in China to reach that landmark. The business also analyzed its completely driverless technology earlier this season in California.

AutoX robotaxis will be allowed to roam anywhere in town, and even though they can’t accept normal members of the people whilst still in trial mode, a demonstration video released by the provider shows among its fleet on a trip across town, in which it successfully navigates round objectsand stops for pedestrians, and completes different manoeuvres unassisted.

The company’s CEO, Jianxiong Xiao, stated in an interview:

It’s a dream… after working so tough for so many years, we now ’ve finally reached the stage that the technology is mature enough, we feel confident by ourselves, to actually remove the security driver.

We have over 100 vehicles driving every day on the street [from China] to capture data, [so] the AI applications is better [now.]

There are now 100 AutoX robotaxis operating with security drivers in various Chinese cities including Shanghai and Wuhan, but Shenzhen is the first to provide the business permission to go completely driverless. That being said, the flights are simply used by employees and a select group of VIPs, and Xiao considers it might be two or three years before the organization is about to accept the general populace as passengers, and even longer before sovereign driving becomes the norm in China.

He explained:

The traffic situations are a lot more challenging…for our AI, we had to do a lot of effort to adapt to the community Chinese way of driving.

The bar is remarkably high, It’s incredibly challenging, but we’re very satisfied.

Instead of constructing their own cars, AutoX is focused on developing technology to provide to present auto-manufacturers looking to present their vehicles a kind of self-driving capability.

Plus they’re not the only ones increasing their strategies to supply a fully fledged robotaxi support; Waymo also declared in October they would be rolling out their very own fleet of completely driverless taxis to associates of its Waymo One program in Phoenix, Arizona. Back in China, two other big companies, Didi and Baidu, have also started accepting passengers in their autonomous vehicles this season, albeit using a security driver present.
