Clubhouse: this is what online learning should look like

Outstanding access to unbelievable folks. If you’re lucky enough to have an invitation to the world’s most exclusive new social media platform Clubhouse, you might be glimpsing the college of their future.

Clubhouse delivers real-time sound discussion ‘chambers ’ in which people from all sorts of businesses and walks-of-life discuss subjects with the audience.

The experience is similar to listening to your podcast — happening live — in which you are able to increase your hand and join in. Nevertheless it is nothing more specialized than the usual group telephone call.

Having a planet in lockdown and millions of people starved of societal interaction, the time of Clubhouse’s release couldn’t be greater.

The magic ingredient is what people ’ve all been missing – shared experience – engaging with something happening collectively as a group, at the present time. Live entertainment. Real debate.

Clubhouse is similar to a festival of MOOCs all in one area. With the most effective teacher-headliners you might desire. Just like Elon Musk for example, who sent the app into meltdown for looking for an impromptu Q&A.

Communal learning online: Isn’t that what we’ve been looking for?

What interests me most about Clubhouse is that it shows the massive potential for group learning online.

With so many universities, colleges and schools trying hard to accommodate to online education, this app was able to realize what numerous edtech solutions fail to provide – communal learning and common expertise.

As manager of OK Student, one of the largest criticisms I hear of online education is that it feels like a solitary process, that pupils are studying independently.

That is in complete contrast to their previous classroom-based experience. Universities often want to concentrate on the curriculum being delivered directly to the customer like a item, but I believe that the university community itself is frequently the true educator.

Communities are learning spaces. Students help each other together — we describe, we talk, we replicate, we share and we inspire ourselves in communal learning and Clubhouse appears to catch those fundamental elements online. Lively discussion where people educate each other as a group.

It’s important to remember that there are lots of concerns about moderation, misinformation and liberty of speech to this platform. But from what I’t noticed so far there is so much worth here for those who want to know.

So what material is about Clubhouse and how can students gain?

The media hype is all about celebrities on the platform but the actual value is access to the people behind the achievement.  Even the execs, the mentors, the business insiders, the shareholders, the techies.

These are the people at the cutting edge of many of our electronic businesses. They aren’t talking about that which they did in the past, they are talking about what they are doing right now.

It’s well documented that pupils will need to develop improved networks and media skills to boost their employability. Any involvement with actual business is always a massive boost towards their entrance into an extremely competitive industry marketplace.

Never have I seen such easy, unregulated access to powerful folks.

These will be the gatekeepers of fantasy technology jobs openly media and sharing their own thoughts. All you’ve got to do is increase your digital hand to be on stage together.

Giving millions of graduates a viewer with this degree of business knowledge and expertise, usually only reserved for students of Stanford University, should be the goal.  If universities could recreate this user experience in their very own online provision it could be a game-changer.

But they’d better do it fast. In the wake of Covid-19 I don’t have any doubt Silicone Valley will be eying-up the global education sector as prime electronic property. Facebook University anyone?

Having undergone Clubhouse, I can see now how it could really work.
