Recently, Elon Musk needed to set the record straight onto a story spun more than three years back about his household owning an emerald mine in South Africa.
The Onion, a satirical book, shared a post on Twitter branded “The Richest Person In Every State And How They Made Their Money. ” In the tweet, The Onion said the richest individual in Texas has been Elon Musk, who left his money through apartheid.
Musk responded in personality, telling the book and saying that readers are changing to fellow satirical news site The Babylon Bee. “Shame for youpersonally, Onion. This is the reason people are switching into @TheBabylonBee! ” Musk composed.
In 2018, Elon Musk and his household were linked to apartheid in South Africa after Business Insider (BI) printed articles saying that the Tesla CEO’s dad owned half a share of an emerald mine in Zambia. The BI posts did not make the link to apartheid.
A range of confirmed Twitter users eventually connected the Musk family’s prosperity with apartheid in South Africa in posts addressing the BI posts. This story was spreading since 2018.

This narrative emerged once more after The Onion received a response from the Tesla CEO on Twitter. Musk needed to tackle the falsehoods people concluded from the posts after a Twitter user shared BI’s 2018 post in The Onion’s tweet.
“If that is half an article is a small peek into the apartheid mines his [family-owned] haha much [T]he Onion informs more honest stories than CNN and Fox,” commented @howlpolitically. The Twitter user’s remark did not appear to be satirical.
Musk responded to @howlpolitically’s remark and explained that the article was untrue. He also shared a post by Jeremy Arnold, a longform writer who talked with Elon Muskhis loved ones, and a few of those billionaire’s near buddies concerning the purported emerald mine and also the origin of his wealth. Musk said that Arnold’s post was “really accurate. ”

Based on his discussions with Musk and people near to himArnold concluded that there are three reasons the billionaire wants to snuff out the false apartheid story. First, Musk may be worried about the ethical implications people may draw out emeralds mined through apartheid in South Africa. Second, the Tesla CEO isn’t keen about the idea that journalists and outstanding outlets, like Business Insider, will eliminate printing false narratives.
And Musk may feel like false narratives, like the individual about his household owning an emerald minecould hinder others from assisting humanity because of the public life they may need to lead.
“Considering the high-scale effect that technician has on the world (bad and good )we should want our best candidates to bring their best, secure in the knowledge that they don’t need the privilege to apply and that what they build won’t be attacked without any cause,” Arnold composed.
