Not long after it had been shown that Tesla is edging nearer to making a million-mile electric automobile battery, General Motors has said it is on the verge of doing exactly the same.
While speaking at a new online investor seminar, GM executive vice president Doug Parks disclosed that the automobile manufacturer is working on batteries that are going to be more advanced than the Ultium battery that it unveiled back in March.
Parks explained that the automobile manufacturer is “nearly there” together with the newest long-life battery and added that “several teams” at GM are functioning on advances such as zero-cobalt electrodes, solid state electrolytes and ultra-fast charging, Reuters reports.
GM’therefore Ultium batteries are somewhat unique because the large-format cells may be stacked horizontally or vertically within the battery pack, permitting engineers to layout and optimize battery life energy storage to each vehicle layout. Ultium energy choices will vary from 50 kWh to 200 kWh permitting for up to 400 miles (644 kilometers ) or a lot of range on each charge and vehicles that could sprint to 60 mph (96 km/h) in no more than 3 seconds.
Future electric vehicles produced by GM with the Ultium batteries will have 400-volt battery packs and up to 200 kW fast-charging capacities, while the brand’s automobile platform will have battery packs and 350 kW fast-charging capacity.
While GM might be close to developing a million-mile batteryTesla seems set to beat them to the punch. Thanks to a partnership with China’s CATL, the electrical automaker’s million-mile battery might premiere in Chinese-built Model 3s this year or early next year.
