GM Will Build New Battery Plant In Tennessee To Supply Cadillac Lyriq

LG Chem is utilized to start a second battery plant with spouse General Motors to provide the automaker’s growing portfolio of upcoming EVs. The plant will be constructed near GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee assembly plant.

The centre was made to provide the Lyriq, which will be constructed in Spring Hill alongside the Cadillac XT5 along with XT6, using the newest Ultium battery cells. According to insideevs, LG Chem and GM are expected to announce their plans on Friday, April 16.

The two businesses are already set to build a battery plant in Lordstown, Ohio, yet the newest one will maker batteries using a “more cheap battery life chemistry ”. The Tennessee centre is anticipated to be up and functioning following the Lyriq goes to production, but until it does, the more electric crossover’s Optium batteries would soon be provided by a different LG plant.

The battery plant is believed to require a $2.3 billion investment. GM previously declared that it would invest $2 billion to performing major upgrades in its Spring Hill factory.

It is not known precisely when production of this Lyriq begins, but renovations to the plant were assumed to begin earlier this season.

The production version of this Lyriq is set to be unveiled later this week in the Shanghai Auto Show. It should be capable of around 300 miles of range, are going to have 33-inch wide infotainment display, and will begin at under $60,000. That will allow it to compete with the Tesla Model X on performance and undercut it on price.

The plant is going to likely be an important step in GM’s claim to stop the sale of all ICE-powered vehicles by 2035 and eventually become a carbon-neutral business by 2040.
