More EVs will follow, together with the launch of new mobility services, including car-sharing and ride-sharing, for its Greek island. The long-term goal for Astypalea is to turn into a “flagship island for sustainable mobility and green vitality ”.

“Astypalea will be a prospective laboratory for decarbonization from Europe,” said VW CEO Herbert Diess. &ldquoWe will be researching in real time what motivates individuals to switch to e-mobility and incentives are needed to transition to a sustainable lifestyle. Volkswagen has been driving this change, providing the full range of sustainable mobility — from cars to charging to renewable energy solutions. Astypalea can grow to be a blueprint for a quick transformation, fostered by the close collaboration of governments and companies. ”

“Astypalea will probably function as a testbed for its green transition: energy-autonomous, also entirely powered by character,” said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “This gorgeous island is an essential pillar in this transition, and I am enormously grateful to the local community for their continued support for the project. Our special partnerships with Volkswagen, among the planet ’s dynamic and innovative car businesses, and with the brilliant research teams at the Universities of the Aegean and Strathclyde, provides us vital insights that will enable us to make incentives for change on the journey to a cleaner, greener, and sustainable future. ”

Sales of electric vehicles to personal clients will begin at the end of the month. Residents of the island will initially have to choose between the VW e-Up, the ID.3, both the ID.4, and also the SEAT MO eScooter, backed up by subsidies from the authorities.

The development of a fully electric car-sharing service along with ride-sharing service is also underway, with all the professional services to replace the current bus services. Moreover, the island will start a 3MW fresh solar park from 2023, which will cover 100 percent of the energy needed to control the EVs in the island and over 50% of the island’s energy requirement. By 2026, the green energy program will be enlarged to cover over 80% of their island’s needs.
