Lawmakers slammed Tesla's public response to some fatal crash involving one of its Model S vehicles that murdered two guys around Houston, Texas, earlier this month following conflicting statements in the company's executives.

"Despite early claims by #Tesla #ElonMusk, autopilot WAS participated in horrible crash at The Woodlands. We Are in Need of answers," Rep. Kevin Brady, a Texas Republican, tweeted Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, said that he had been "disappointed" that Musk weighed in publicly at all, given both national agencies still have ongoing investigations into the episode.

Tesla did not respond to your request for comment.

Local police said following the accident that neither of the bodies that they recovered were at the motorist 's seat, prompting questions about whether the automobile 's "autopilot" system – a suite of AI-powered driver support features – had been engaged while the vehicle crashed.

Two days after the accident, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that early data acquired in the Model S showed "autopilot wasn’t enabled," and he doubled down on these promises at Tesla's earnings call Monday, contradicting local police.
