Mercedes EQS Debuts April 15th, Battery Production Already Underway

The wait is nearly over as Mercedes has announced plans to introduce the 2022 EQS on April 15th.

The highly anticipated electric car will usher in a new era for Mercedes and need to present a serious danger to the Tesla Model S.

Mercedes remains keeping details under wraps, however they affirmed battery production is currently underway at their Stuttgart-Hedelfingen plant in Germany. The facility has a production and logistics region which spans roughly 177,605 square feet (16,500 square meters), and batteries are made on a production line that is approximately 984 feet (300 meters) long and contains more than 70 individual production stations.

The EQS will be provided with a number of battery packs to meet different functionality and range demands . The largest will have a capacity of 108 kWh, which allows for a range in excess of 700 km (435 kilometers ) in the WLTP cycle). Mercedes also noted the EQS’ electricity management program will manage getting over-the-air upgrades, while the electrons will have “CO2-neutrally produced cellsrdquo; as well as a chemistry that reduces the demand for cobalt.

While production is only getting underway in Stuttgart-Hedelfingen, Mercedes is currently looking forward as a new factory for small-series creation of future lithium-ion battery cells is being proposed. It’s slated to start in 2023 and keep pushing battery technologies forward.

As we’ve previously reported, Mercedes comes with an range of electrical vehicles on the horizon.  In the following two years, the EQ household will expand to include more than than ten electrical vehicles including the forthcoming EQE in addition to crossover variations of their EQS and EQE.
