Nikola hands off fuel cell and battery systems to GM in joint venture

Nikola Motor has reached a deal with General Motors that will observe the heritage automaker produce its first pickup truck, even the Badger. GM will hold the duty of engineering the battery and fuel cell electric vehicle variants of Nikola’s introductory passenger vehicle, according to resources.

In exchange for its “in-kind services,” GM will receive a $2 million equity bet in Nikola. The Detroit-based GM is going to be asked to confirm, homologate, also build the Badger for Nikola, that will conserve the startup more than $4 billion in battery and also powertrain prices over ten years. An extra billion dollars are also saved in engineering and validation costs.

GM expects to receive more than $4 billion of benefits “involving the equity of their shares, contract manufacturing of the badger, supply contracts for batteries and fuel cells, and EV credits kept within the life span of the contract,” according to @andyjayhawk on Twitter.

GM are also the exclusive provider of fuel cells for Nikola’s class 7 and class eight trucks outside of the European sector. Both of these categorizations are for “heavy trucks” that may weigh 26,001 pounds and up.

General Motors confirmed the announcement that afternoon on Twitter and stated that the Nikola Badger would utilize GM’s Hydrotec fuel-cell technology and Ultium battery powered systems.

GM has expanded its exploration into EV and alternative-fuel vehicle development within the past several months. Executive Vice President Doug Parks has stated that the automaker has “multiple groups ” working on creating zero-cobalt batteries, solid-state electrolytes, and an ultra-fast charging infrastructure.

But GM taking on Nikola’s projects is an entirely different ballgame in comparison to a traditional EV project. Nikola’s vehicles are mostly hydrogen fuel-cell-based, but the Badger pickup will soon be available in equally FCEV and BEV variants.

Nikola has been the topic of heavy criticism from the past from skeptics. CEO Trevor Milton was vocal about his support for transferring the entire world to more sustainable forms of transportation. Still, the EV neighborhood has lots of criticism to the mind of the firm that has been outspoken in his support for his business.

Perhaps a partnership with a proven automaker can help Nikola start generating its vehicles in an more efficient timeframe. The Badger isn’t expected to be generated before 2022, and the business is presently working on the building of a production centre in Coolidge, Arizona.
