The work of the Gravity Research Foundation (GRF) of New Boston, Massachusetts, has been proving invaluable in attempts at extending theories of anti-gravity into the overall discourse of the scientific community, transferring the subject from the domain of “crackpots” into abstraction and generalizations based on a broad array of observations and the outcomes of sundry experimentation.  In the GRF award-winning essay selected for 1950, a subsequently graduate student in the math department at Princeton University in New Jersey, Richard A. Ferrell, turned his focus to both principal features of general relativity for a field concept and how it relates to this gravitational interaction of matter.  These comprised:

1. The creation of the field of disturbance in distance by the thing present elsewhere.  One portion of distance is considered to affect (more strongly when it contains thing ) its neighbor, even the latte to maneuver on the condition in turn into its neighbor, etc till the disturbance was extended through the world.  This situation is analogous to the dispersing of waves across the surface of a pond.  There are partial differential equations to describe precisely how the neighbors act on another.

2. The exertion of forces upon thing at any certain point in the field or disturbance which happens to exist at the point.  

From his preliminary evaluation of this two-part concept, Ferrell initially thought that he might have the ability to attack the issue of locating gravitational defenses, absorbers, reflectors or similar devices via an investigation of either of the two aspects separately.  He was expecting to locate a new way of producing the field or a brand fresh way of having the field act on the topic.  However, Ferrell noted within his GRF 1950 essay about the “Possibility of New Gravitational Effects,” that, “A particle which, according to the second aspect of the concept, is relied upon from the field will also produce a field of its own.  When this is added into the first field already present, one can describe that the total field in terms of the equations of this first facet of this notion.  These equations require the field at each point of space to modify in a specific manner with time, and hence also specify the way in which the portion due to the particle varies with time. ”

The young scientist chose to describe this complex subject: “But since the particle and the field it generates are intimately connected, we therefore understand that the movement of this particle can also be determined by the initial aspect and that the next part is not actually a different, independent phase of the notion.  The realization and evidence of this fact is a development of recent decades.  More precisely, Einstein, Schild and also Infield have demonstrated that the equation of motion of a particle can be derived from gravitational field equations. ”

Essentially, after Einstein’s long road of specimens had led Ferrell down to some dead-end street when it came to discovering any potential accessibility it might afford to useful and new effects like the shield, reflection or absorption of this gravitational field.  The scientist guessed that, “This doesn’t mean that new effects are not likely to be found.  Nonetheless, these potential effects will certainly be somewhat subtle to have gone undetected for so long.  Such, for example, was the case with the discovery of the laws of electromagnetism from Faraday and Maxwell.  Only much later did these slight and formerly unnoticed phenomena become the basis of dynamos, electric motors, radio, etc.”

Farrell did acknowledge that the scientific area of the early 1950s must remain optimistic about locating a unified field theory which will satisfactorily explain both gravitation and electrodynamics.  He noted that Einstein’s newest concept had not yet attained that important stage; however, in the young scientist’s estimation, Einstein’s theorizing gave every indication of at least moving in the right path toward accomplishing this end.  Clearly, if such a comprehensive concept appears on the scene, it must give many predictions of completely unsuspected phenomena, depending on the interaction of electric charges along with the atmospheric field.  The wonderful difficulty with laboratory experiments between general relativity, however, is in measuring the very smallish outcomes.

The Princeton graduate student addressed this issue: “However,” he also announced, “when coupled with the much more powerful electrical consequences, general relativity might be created an experimental field of analysis and brought into the laboratory for the very first time.  Function in both theoretical and hopefully, later the experimental aspects of this topic ought to be encouraged since it could be very fruitful. ”

What history has shown is that a frontal assault in science doesn’t necessarily prove to be the most successful strategy.  Endeavors which are directed primarily by the desire to understand and to know the laws of nature have proven to be those that have resulted in getting the very valuable to the progress of humankind, i.e. backyard mechanisms like John Roy Robert Searl in the United Kingdom attempting to build their own variations of flying saucers or even Nikola Tesla designing electric airships based on visions and dreams.  

One of the two aspects of Einstein’s concept, nevertheless, Ferrell did acknowledge that, “There is only one feature to consider in studying known and in scouting for unknown gravitational consequences, viz. The creation of this field by thing. ”  Isn’t it interesting to remember that Searl hypothesized that gravity was a particle?  As it emitted radiation, he assumed it’s a mass.
