Rivian To Establish Charging Network Throughout The Wilderness Of The U.S.

Rivian has announced plans to establish a charging network across the United States well off-the-beaten track.

Besides establishing a network of fast-chargers along interstates and throughout cities, Rivian will set up plenty of chargers at different destinations in character, such as mountain bike and hiking trails, to holiday spots and hot rock-climbing areas.

“We& & rsquo;re excited about the opportunity to create Rivian charging places which aren’t onto the interstatehighway, which assist draw you or enable you to go to places that normally are not the types of places that welcome or invite electric vehicles due to charging infrastructure,” Rivian creator and chief executive RJ Scaringe informed Tech Crunch in a recent interview.

Whereas many car manufacturers are partnering up using third party charging supplies like ChargePoint, EVConnect, EVGo, Electrify America, and Greenlots, Rivian may establish its own charging network like Tesla. This network will comprise fast-chargers together interstates and slower destination charges elsewhere.

Scaringe revealed that Rivian has opted to go solo with its charging network so it can control all aspects of the experience.

“The challenge is that we do ’t control those programs, hence the payments programs, the Upgrades, the functionality, the capability to book a charger — all those things which take the friction of charging away — we still don’t truly control,” stated Scaringe. “With the Rivian Adventure Networkwe now have 100% control of that; we get to understand what vehicles are either charging or how theyrsquo;re charging, the rates. We can be really creative in terms of places, so it can allow us to get to places which are very specific and unique to Rivian. ”

Rivian’s models use the Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors, an international standard that is gaining popularity. In concept, this would mean additional CCS-equipped vehicles may use Rivian charging stations however it’so they can be locked outside with applications.
