A deepfake tool called “Avatarify” can transform users in real-time during calls to Zoom and Skype.

Published online last week by Moscow-based engineer Ali Aliev, the software works by analyzing a user’s face and shifting their moves to a photo of some other person.

Aliev showcased the project in a demonstration on YouTube in which he managed to control everyone’s facial movements, from renowned physicist Albert Einstein to star Eminem.

Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, the program demands a graphics card and command line information that is basic to install and operate.

Despite high-end hardware, but the program struggles to accurately transfer the mouth and eye movements over into the avatar. The end result remains impressive given that only one image is required, while deepfake tools don’t work in real-time and need a huge number of images.

Another demonstration released by Aliev reveals Avatarify being used throughout a staged Zoom telephone in which one of these participants is made to seem like Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
