Since Tesla ramps its attempts to obtain more resources because of its own battery production projects, Indonesian President Joko Widodo has revealed that he is sending a high-level delegation to meet with the electric car maker’s leading executives next week. The discussions will likely involve a potential battery facility deal in Indonesia, a country that stands as the world’s largest nickel producer.

In an announcement to Reuters on Fridaythe presidentbetter known by his nickname,” Jokowi, stated that the excursion is going to be a part of Indonesia’s promotion of its “Omnibus” Job Creation law, that is aimed at simplifying how businesses can do business in the country. The “Omnibus” initiative harmonizes 79 current laws, substantially cutting red tape and potentially spurring investments from interested companies.

The delegation which is going to be meeting Tesla executives following week will include high performance officials, together with the group led by Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan. “It’s crucial because we’ve got a fantastic strategy to make Indonesia the greatest manufacturer of lithium batteries and we’ve got the biggest nickel (reservations ),” Jokowi stated.

In another interview, Luhut noted he and his team won’t only be meeting Tesla executives; the Indonesian delegation are also holding meetings with the World Bank and US fund managers. The assembly will largely involve the country’s “Omnibus” legislation and its ecological projects. While Luhut failed to provide details about his group ’s forthcoming interview with Tesla, he’d say “there’s a great opportunity ” which firms would like to invest in Indonesian nickel to conserve costs.

Such a pitch will likely be perceived favorably by Tesla, considering CEO Elon Musk has issued an open call for nickel producers across the world. Musk has stated that Tesla is poised to give enormous, long term contracts to nickel producers, provided the content is mined “economically and in an environmentally sensitive manner. ” Luhut, because of his role has noted that Indonesia is aiming to produce the supply chain of batteries environmentally-friendly in seven to eight years from powering smelters with renewable sources.

Previous reports have indicated that Tesla might be planning on building a committed battery mill in Indonesia, on account of the country’s massive nickel supply. In an announcement to CNBC Indonesia last month, Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang stated that talks with Tesla are ongoing for a possible battery mill in the Batang area. These points were formerly highlighted by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment General TNI (Purn) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, who noted he had spoken to the American electric car maker.

Ayodhia Kalake, a senior official at Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment, has also reported that Tesla had reached out to the government about a possible venture in the country. “It was still an early discussion and was not comprehensive yet. We want further discussion together with Tesla,” the senior official said.
