As can be seen from pictures uploaded of the service, Musk shared the stage together with the very first vehicle anticipated to be produced in the approaching centre — a Tesla Model 3.

Contrary to Tesla’s Gigafactory at Nevada, that produces the Model 3’s drive units and battery packs, Gigafactory 3 has been set to be outfitted with manufacturing lines for batteries and electric cars. As supported by Elon Musk earlier today before the centre ’s revolutionary service , the Shanghai facility will be producing the Model 3 car as well as also the Model Y SUV.

In a followup tweet, though, Musk also mentioned a specially noteworthy detail concerning Gigafactory 3’s output. In his update, Musk said the upcoming Shanghai centre will be solely generating “affordable” versions of the Model 3 and Model Y.  Higher-end versions of the automobiles, such as the Model 3 Performance, could nevertheless be constructed from the United States and exported to international markets, including China.

Such an announcement bodes well for Tesla’s strategy in the Asian economic superpower. Tesla’s vehicles from the country, after all, have so far been simpler compared to EVs created by local electric auto manufacturers. By producing its lower-end Model 3 and Model Y at Gigafactory 3, Tesla will be able to price the vehicles quite competitively in the country, mainly as the electric cars wouldn’t be subject to import taxes — regardless of the existence of a trade war between the United States and China.

Elon Musk hasn’t provided more details about the “affordable” versions of the Model 3 and Model Y which could be created in Gigafactory 3. In the case of the Model 3, though, Musk’s statement probably relates to the Standard Range version of the sedan. This ’s a vehicle which is, in its simplest iteration, priced at the United States at precisely the identical variety as a top-tier Toyota Camry. The Tesla Model Y, on the other hand, is an electric car that would be competing in a market already enamored with SUVs. Back in China, a country that is aggressively pushing for the adoption of electric automobiles, such electric cars will probably be disruptive.

Tesla is aiming to stick to an incredibly ambitious timetable for Gigafactory 3. When the company initially announced its target of starting vehicle production over two years after the facility begins building, most from the United States were doubtful. Wall Street analyst James Albertine, to get a single, flat-out declared the target timeline was “not attainable. ” In Tesla’s Q3 2018 manufacturing and deliveries report, Tesla did fix its estimates, making its timetable more competitive. Before now, Musk noted on Twitter the objective is to complete the first building of Gigafactory 3 that summer, followed closely by the start of Model 3 generation by the end of 2019. Large-scale production of the electric sedan will begin sometime next year.

While such an aggressive deadline is classic Elon Musk, it should be noted that Tesla appears to be receiving a considerable quantity of support in the Chinese government. After the job was officially announced this past year, as an instance, it did not take long until local Shanghai banks allowed Tesla low-interest loans to fund a portion of their facility’s construction. Moreover, Tesla’s bid to get the 864,885-square meter plot of land from Shanghai’s Lingang Industrial Zone went unchallenged. The company’s construction spouse,  China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd, is also a subsidiary of China Construction, that is possessed by the government.

With assistance from the community Chinese government, there’s almost undoubtedly that Gigafactory 3 will soon be completed on schedule. Finally, the start of Model 3 generation in the approaching facility would probably depend on Tesla’s capability to ship and set up its gear in the battery and electric car factory.
