Back in August 2019, Porsche made headlines when it revealed that its all-electric Taycan Turbo had been in a position to finish a lap around the Nürburgring in 7 minutes 42 minutes, well below the company’s goal time of sub-8 minutes. The effort was celebrated from the EV community, and also Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who poked fun at the automobile ’s “Turbo” moniker, stated that the Taycan “does seem like a fantastic car. ” Musk added that the Taycan Turbo’s “Nürburgring monitor time is wonderful. ”
Even the Porsche Taycan Turbo’s 7:42 lap around the Nürburgring was widely celebrated because not many manufacturing electric cars are capable of doing at optimum around the unforgiving nearly-13-mile track. The Nürburgring is dubbed the “Green Hell” therefore, and one of these is that it’s a monitor that has the potential to take its toll on both drivers and cars alike. It was then cause for celebration if Porsche, with its decades of racing experience, eventually proved that even manufacturing EVs could run an outstanding lap around the Nürburgring.

What is rather remarkable is that a Tesla Model 3 Performance, a vehicle that very literally costs a fraction of this Taycan Turbo, recently came within striking distance of this Taycan Turbo’s lap record. During a run around the Nürburgring with visitors and on wet sidewalk, the Tesla Model 3 Performance managed to finish a lap around the Nürburgring at 7:44, just two minutes behind the Taycan Turbo’s unofficial record. This has been made possible by rather simple upgrades to the car, for example much better suspension and brakes.
Quite interestingly, the Model 3 Performance that conducted a 7:44 from the Nürburgring was the exact same vehicle that created the rounds at the EV community back in September. Back then, the car, that was partly altered, was driven around the Nürburgring from YouTube car reviewer Misha Charoudin. This run, that became quite meme-worthy due to the responses of the automobile ’s passenger, has been completed in just 8 minutes 10 minutes.
The vehicle has since been experiencing more improvements from Tesla pruning home Unplugged Performance. As noted by Unplugged CEO Ben Schaffer, the Model 3 Performance had obtained any upgrades to its own suspension, brakes, and wheels. And with those alterations, the Model 3 Performance happened on the track once again with driver Luis Ramirez behind the wheel. The result was the all-electric sedan’s 7:44 lap with visitors and on wet sidewalk.
In an announcement to Teslarati, Schaffer remarked that the Model 3 will probably defeat the Taycan Turbo’s time using a road song. At its full potential, the Unplugged CEO estimates that the Model 3 Performance may actually be capable of conducting a lap around the Green Hell at the 7:30 range. If that were to maneuver, it would definitely be more challenging to dismiss the capabilities of electrical vehicles at a racetrack. Even the Model 3, after all, is a reasonably-priced electric auto, and in spite of its alterations contained, very few vehicles in its price range may reach a 7:44 lap around the Nürburgring in comparable ailments.
