Throughout the recently-held fourth-quarter earnings call, Elon Musk all but said that Tesla holds a remarkable lead in the self-driving field. While reacting to Loup Ventures analyst Gene Munster, who inquired about Morgan Stanley’therefore projected $175 billion valuation for Waymo and its own self-driving technology, Musk noticed that Tesla actually has an edge over other businesses involved with the growth of autonomous technologies, especially in regards to real world miles.

“If you add up everyone joint, they I’m generous — of the miles which Tesla has. And this distinction is increasing. A year from nowwe’ll probably go — definitely from 18 months from now, we’ll probably have 1 million automobiles on the road with — which are — and every time the clients drive the car, they’re training the systems to function better. I’m just not certain how anybody competes with that,” Musk explained.

To carry its systems towards full autonomy, Tesla was developing its custom made hardware. Designed by Apple alumni Pete Bannon, Tesla’s Hardware 3 update is anticipated to provide the firm ’s vehicles using a 1000% increase in processing capacity in comparison to present hardware. Tesla has released just a few tips about HW3’s capabilities over the previous months. That saida patent application from the electric vehicle maker has just been released by the US Patent Office, hinting at an “Accelerated Mathematical Engine” which would probably be used for Tesla’s Hardware 3.

In the patent’therefore announcement, Tesla notes that there is a requirement to build up “high-computational-throughput approaches and methods that may perform matrix mathematical operations quickly and economically,” believing that present systems have noteworthy limitations. These constraints become evident in computationally demanding programs.

“Computationally demanding applications, like a convolution, oftentimes take a software role be embedded in computation unit 102 and utilized to convert convolution operations to alternate matrix-multiply operations. This can be accomplished reformatting and by rearranging data to two matrices that can be raw matrix-multiplied. There is no mechanism to effectively reuse or share data in scalar machine 100, such that data has to be re-stored and re-fetched from times. The complexity and managerial overhead of the operations becomes subject to convolution operations rises that are considerably greater as the quantity of graphic data. ”

To address these constraints, Tesla’s patent application hints at the use of a custom matrix chip architecture. Tesla summarizes its matrix chip architecture in the next section.

“FIG. 2 illustrates an exemplary matrix chip architecture for performing arithmetic operations according to various embodiments of the present disclosure. System 200 comprises logic circuit 232 234, cache/buffer 224, data formatter 210, weight formatter 212, data input matrix 206, weight management matrix 208, matrix chip 240, output array 226, post processing components management logic 250, and 228. Matrix chip 240 comprises a plurality of sub-circuits 242 which contain Arithmetic Logic Units (ALUs), registers and, in certain embodiments, encoders (for example, stall encoders). Logic circuit 232 could be a circuit which represents N enter operators and data registers. Logic circuit 234 could be circuitry which inputs M pounds operands into matrix chip 240. Logic circuit 232 can be circuitry that enter graphic data operands to matrix chip 240. Weight input matrix 208 and data entered matrix 206 may be stored in various kinds of memory including SRAM devices. 1 expert in the art would understand that various kinds of operands may be entered to the matrix chip 240. ”

By using the system outlined in its newly published patent application, Tesla notes that its hardware would have the ability to support larger amounts of data. Tesla notes that these processes are more efficient too.

“Unlike common software implementations of partitioning functions which are performed by a CPU or GPU to convert a convolution operation to a matrix-multiply by dividing data to an alternate format that’s acceptable for a quick matrix multiplication, many hardware implementations of the current disclosure re-format data on the fly and then also allow it to be available for execution, e.g., 96 pieces of data every cycle, in consequence, allowing an extremely high number of components of a matrix to be processed in parallel, thus effectively mapping data to a matrix operation. In embodiments, for 2N fetched enter data 2N2 compute data may be obtained in one clock cycle. This architecture leads to a significant improvement in processing rates by effectively reducing the number of research or bring operations employed in a normal chip architecture as well as supplying a paralleled, efficient and synchronized process in executing a high number of mathematical operations across a plurality of data inputs. ”

“In operation according to specific embodiments, system 200 accelerates convolution operations by reducing simple operations inside the systems and implementing gear logic to perform specific mathematical operations across a massive set of weights and data. This acceleration is an immediate outcome of methods (and corresponding hardware components) that retrieve and input image weights and data to the matrix chip 240 as well as time consuming mathematical operations inside the matrix chip 240 to a massive scale. ”

Tesla failed to offer concrete updates on the maturation and release of Hardware 3 to the firm ’s fleet of automobiles. Having said that, Musk said that FSD would probably be prepared near the end of 2019, although it will be up to authorities to approve the autonomous acts by then.

Back in October, Musk reported that Hardware 3 could be outfitted in most new production cars in approximately 6 weeks, which translates to a rollout date of approximately April 2019. Musk said that transitioning to the hardware will not involve any changes with vehicle manufacturing, as the update is simply a replacement of this Autopilot computer installed all electric cars today. In a tweet, Musk mentioned that Tesla owners that purchased Full Self-Driving could obtain the Hardware 3 update free of charge. Owners who have not ordered Full Self-Driving, on the other hand, would probably cover $5,000 for the FSD package as well as the newest hardware.
