When GM announced that it was closing a number of its crops in the US and Canada, questions were increased if Elon Musk would leap to the chance to obtain more facilities for Tesla. The electric car maker, after all, has grown significantly through time, beginning as a market carmaker that made a small, quick two-door sports car, also evolving to a company that currently creates among America’s best-selling passenger cars. Together with all the Model 3 ramp, Tesla has found itself unable to meet demand, and even its expansive Fremont factory, as Elon Musk put it, had become “packed to the gills. ”
Tesla is poised for much more expansion, as the company is set to release a number of its most ambitious vehicles yet, such as the Model Y SUV, the Tesla pickup truck, the Tesla Semi, and also the next-generation Tesla Roadster. With GM closing a number of its crops, an opportunity seems to be emerging Tesla to obtain more manufacturing capabilities in the US. This is an idea that Elon Musk is available , as shown during his latest segment in CBS‘ 60 Minutes. When requested by host Lesley Stahl if he is interested in obtaining facilities that GM would be retiring, Musk answered in the affirmative.
“It’s possible that we would be interested, when they (GM) were going to market a plant or never use it, that we’d take it ” he explained.
Musk’s announcement seems to have resonated with Ohio officials, particularly Governor John Kasich. In a recent article on Twitter, Kasich encouraged Musk and Tesla to visit Ohio. Kasich even pitched the nation ’s employees to the CEO, saying that “there are not any better employees than Ohio employees. ” Directly referencing the GM plant set to be shut down in 2019, the Ohio governor added that “Lordstown is ready for you. ” Musk, for his part, has issued a brief reaction to Kasich’s article.

The past couple of years have not been kind to the experienced auto employees from Lordstown, Ohio. Over the course of 2018, the 52-year-old assembly plant, which is responsible for constructing the Chevrolet Cruze, had witnessed several layoffs. Back in April, for example, GM cut the plant’s second shift, removing 1,500 jobs in the procedure. By late November, the American legacy automaker confirmed that it might be retiring the center next year, as the organization focuses on constructing crossovers, SUVs, pickups, and electrical vehicles.
Ohio’s officials tried to keep the Lordstown plant available for so long as they can. A report from neighborhood information outlet Cincinnati.com noted that US Sen. Sherrod Brown, Ohio’s senior senator, tried to find a commitment from GM CEO Mary Barra. Ohio governor John Kasich did the same, even talking about the prospect of repurposing the facility with all the GM CEO. Despite these efforts, the Lordstown assembly plant has been listed as one of the facilities beneath GM’s chopping block nonetheless.

If Tesla does wind up obtaining GM’s Lordstown plant, the electrical car maker would be able to tap into an experienced workforce that has decades of experience building cars. This bodes well for Tesla, particularly as the organization has several vehicles anticipated for release from the next few years. That said, obtaining the plant might present challenges for the electrical car maker also, particularly as the United Auto Workers union (UAW), an organization that’s not in good relation together with Tesla, was influential in the Lordstown facility.
Tesla’s mission of accelerating the world’s transition into renewable energy is beginning to take form. Equipped with competitive, disruptive, zero-emissions vehicles like the Model 3, legacy carmakers such as GM are now taking to a much more EV-friendly approach. Since the established businesses go through those transitions, however, there are bound to be casualties. For GM, a few of those casualties are the Lordstown plant’so workers. For all these seasoned employees, the possible coming of Tesla may very well be what they have to make sure that the auto industry stays alive from the state for years to come.
