Tesla’s Supercharging Discount Explained: How To Save 50%

One of the biggest draws to Tesla over other electric vehicles is its massive Supercharger network, and now for drivers in California, the automaker is offering a 50% discount on its chargers during certain times of the day. Tesla has managed to make its cars stand out for a variety of reasons, but charging is easily one of the biggest draws. There are currently more than 20,000 Superchargers across the globe, just 15 minutes of charging can add up to 200 miles of range, and Tesla’s managed to keep prices considerably lower compared to gas stations.

The problem, however, is that certain Supercharger locations can become very crowded very quickly. Tesla is selling more vehicles than it’s able to build new Supercharger locations, and as a result of this, overcrowding can be a common occurrence.

As reported by Electrek, Tesla is now experimenting with a new program to try and combat this. Numerous Tesla owners in California have begun receiving a notification in the Tesla mobile app, with it saying, “Avoid the rush and save 50% on your charging fees before 10 a.m. and after 7 p.m. at all Superchargers in California’s major metro areas.” The message then says that drivers can then find eligible Supercharger locations using the app or on their car’s touchscreen, along with seeing exact rates with the new discount. Judging by the wording of the notification, it seems that the discount will be targeted at Supercharging locations in especially dense/populated areas of the state.

This isn’t the first time Tesla has tried to entice customers with lower Supercharger prices in an effort to reduce traffic. Tesla tried doing something similar in California back in October 2020, but those discounts were limited to just a couple of days here and there. With this latest discount, it appears that it’ll be around for a while longer.

Furthermore, while these discounts are great to see, they’re likely just a temporary fix while Tesla keeps working on its infrastructure for the Supercharger network. Tesla is building more Superchargers all the time, and with some of its more recent ones, the company is adding more charging stations and increasing charge times — all in an effort to get people in and out as quickly as possible. That means these limited discounts may not always exist as the network becomes more mature and reliable, but that’s ultimately better for everyone. Getting a lower charging rate is a nice perk for now, but the end goal is to get Superchargers to a place where there are consistently enough options for everyone to charge whenever they want to.
