Toyota plans rival to Tesla Model Y, VW ID4 at Shanghai show



Toyota will utilize the Shanghai auto show next month to unveil a near-production concept of that a full-electric utility vehicle that will compete against battery-powered models like the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID4.

The EV is similar in size to the company’s RAV4 crossver.

The automobile is based on the automaker’s brand new electric-only e-TNGA stage , which the automaker is developing to underpin battery-electric automobiles for major markets like China, the U.S. and Europe.

The system is flexible enough to adapt body styles including a utility vehicle with three rows of seating, a sporty sedan, a little crossover or a streamlined car. It may encourage rear-wheel-, front-wheel- and all-wheel-drive layouts and differing battery dimensions that range from 50 kilowatt hours to 100 kWh.

The utiltiy car is going to be sold in Europe, the U.S. and China, a Toyota spokesman told Automotive News Europe.  The business gave no date for the sales launching but it is forecast to reach showrooms next year.
