Unboxing The Tech That Makes Mercedes’ EQS the New S-Class Of Electric Cars

The Mercedes-Benz EQS portrays itself as a symbol of how far electric cars have come in terms of design. However, as impressive it looks, the EQS is just as much tech showcase as it is transportatio, which is probably why Lewis Hilsenteger from YouTube Channel, Unbox Therapy, is one of the first to get up close and personal with Mercedes’ electric flagship.

Among other things, the EQS is Mercedes-Benz’s answer to the Model S. The Tesla, despite being somewhat long in the tooth, rules the roost when it comes to this market segment and defines what is expected from electric cars. The counter, the EQS, has a fair amount of new features, which set out to impress not only the German brand’s existing clientele but a whole host of new EV-savvy tech-seekers as well.

The EQS is the flagship model on their electric car platform and will give way to other electric cars by the Mercedes brand. Cars such as the Mercedes EQA, EQB, EQE, and EQS SUV.

The Mercedes EQS is a new direction for the Mercedes brand and signifies its dedication to electrifying their vehicle lineup. It boasts the lowest drag of any production car made, with a coefficient of just 0.20. Less resistance helps the Mercedes EQS achieve an impressive range of 478 miles on a full battery. Mercedes’ launch figures relate to a 107.8 kWh battery, but the company says a smaller 90 kWh version will also be available, and you can add 186 miles of range in 15 minutes.

But it’s inside that impresses the reviewer most of all. The centerpiece is the long-touted “hyperscreen.” This door-to-door glass dash is the largest in-car screen fitted to a car—a whopping 56 inches and certainly makes an impact, if not being perhaps a little OTT.

There are bags more features too. Lew mentions that it’s like stepping into a piece of tech rather than a car, with lighting that works alongside the car’s seat settings to provide the driver and passengers unparalleled comfort. You also get an air purification system that includes the ability to reduce nitrogen oxide and odours. Not to mention augmented reality navigation and motorized opening and closing doors.

Under the hood, or so to speak, the EQS 450 makes 329 hp with power sent to the rear. The range-topping EQS 580 4Matic is in a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration and pushes 516 hp. The EQS will be on sale stateside in the fall of 2021.
