Volkswagen Group To Turn Greek Island Into An EV Paradise

VW Group and also Greece announced their strategy to turn the small island of Astypalea into a model for electric and connected mobility services.

The German carmaker signed a memorandum of understanding with Greece to establish a radical mobility system on the small island of Astypalea, that will replace the island’s 1,500 vehicles with combustion engines with some 1,000 electric vehicles and launching an all-electric year-round ridesharing support.

The ridesharing agency in Astypalea, that includes a population of around 1,300 and has been visited by some 72,000 tourists every year, is designed to upgrade the current and very limited community bus service. Section of this island’s traditional vehicle rental companies will be transformed into an automobile sharing service, providing e-scooters from SEAT and e-bikes, in addition to electric cars.

Commercial vehicles in local companies and utility vehicles -such as police cars, emergency providers transportation, and public sector fleets- will also be electrified.

The VW Group stated they will install around 230 public and private charging points throughout the island to establish the necessary infrastructure, whereas the essential energy will be exclusively covered by renewable energy sources.

“Politics, company and society have a frequent duty to restrict climate change”,” said Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen Group. “Our long-term objective is climate-neutral mobility for everyone. With the Astypalea job we will explore how to realize that vision now now. E-mobility and smart mobility will improve the quality of lifewhile leading to a carbon unbiased future. ”

Electric transport and also a holistic, green, and sustainable action program is going to have a positive impact on the daily life of this island’so inhabitants. Along with a pioneering public transportation system, we are turning futuristic ideas into reality. ”
