It seems that Volkswagen of America is intent on changing its name to “Voltswagen” of all America.
The name change was first signaled in an incomplete press release on the company’s website that, apparently, was published early and was because deleted. CNBC, that first caught the story, reports that the release was dated April 29.
According to the document, the name is an “public statement of the company’s future-forward investment in e-mobility. ” The brand name will look on VW’s EV versions, whilst combustion versions will just contain the “VW” emblem .
“The brand name and branding symbolize the highly-charged forward momentum Voltswagen has set in movement, pursuing a goal of moving all people point-to-point with EVs,” the automaker composed in the release, a USA Today which also caught the release before it had been deleted.

The release went on to state combustion vehicles will keep a dark blue color in their emblem, but this blue will be lightened for EVs as a means to further differentiate versions. The name is for the US only, though. VW will maintain the K at Europe and Voltswagen will be a subsidiary of the “Volkswagen Group of America. ”
Although the leak’s proximity to April 1 led some to imply that the release could have been an April Fools joke, multiple outlets cite unnamed sources confirming this was no joke and VW’s name will change in the US.
Volkswagen hasn’t been bashful about using its advertising to market its electrical transition. At September 2019, the brand updated its emblem to make it more app-friendly and also to telegraph its transition to future technologies.
We hunted the United States Patent and Trademark Office for virtually any trademarks referring to “Voltswagen,” but did not find any.
The promise that the name will look on EVs is curious since the ID.4, the first car based on VW’s electric-only platform offered in America seems to comprise no more “Volkswagen” logos whose Ks could be replaced with Ts. One is left to assume, therefore, the change will mean the accession of “Voltswagen” badges or will likely probably be restricted to the infotainment system.
Volkswagen is currently in the midst of a widescale electrical transformation unveiling a variety of electrical vehicles dependent on the EV-only MEB platform. It recently claimed that a completely different generation of even better electrical vehicles will follow 2025.
