You Season 3 Stupidly Created Its Own Worst Plot Hole

Despite many compelling narratives, You season 3 also stupidly created its own worst plothole, which even the titular Joe Goldberg cannot fix. You season 3 centers around Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) and Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), attempting to rebuild their lives and trust inside the idyllic Californian suburb of Madre Linda. Although You season 3’s ending has garnered widespread critical acclaim upon release, Joe’s relentless cycle of obsession fixation on a new “You” throws up a fresh series of plot holes for the series to contend with.

The initial object of Joe’s desires, Natalie Engler (Michaela McManus), is surprisingly killed off early by the You season 3 script to introduce bookish beauty Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle). After discovering Joe’s box of Natalie’s effects, Love lures Natalie to the site of her new bakery before remorselessly cutting her down with a fire ax. This murder spawns a fruitless search for Natalie, spurred on by her heartbroken husband Matthew (Underworld’s Scott Speedman), who eventually abuses his position as CEO of a tech company to pull surveillance footage on the whole town.

Yet, by introducing tech-savvy Matt Engler into the mix, You season 3 creates its own worst plothole. Matthew’s vast array of camera footage means there is an incredibly slim chance he is unable to catch one of the numerous crimes and murders on tape that Love and Joe commit. Furthermore, by introducing an obsessive security genius who has almost unlimited resources to surveil Love and Joe, You season 3 is begging a huge suspension of disbelief as to how Matthew does not find more information on his wife’s demise.

Matthew Engler is introduced via one of Joe’s monologues as an affluent tech CEO and decidedly distant father and husband. Only one of these statements remains true for the character in You season 3, however, as Matthew is proven to be a devoted husband hell-bent on catching Natalie’s killer. Matt is shown to purchase a large number of servers, which he uses to store the entirety of Madre Linda’s surveillance footage, as well as video from private networks and devices across the suburb. While highly illegal, Matthew doggedly spools over this vast amount of video via the help of his colleague to uncover evidence that directly points to Natalie’s fate.

However, introducing a driven, obsessive, and technologically bright character throws a wrench into the narrative choices of You season 3. With Joe and Love committing so many crimes in the open, from moving dead bodies to Joe upping the ante from You season 2 and actually stabbing a man to death in public. As a result, it seems highly unlikely Matthew’s network of video would not have picked up at least one of these heinous acts. Additionally, Love disposes of her front door camera on advice from Matthew’s son Theo (Dylan Arnold), who states that his father has access to the town’s private devices as well as the aforementioned camera footage.

This leaves You season 3’s storyline in a state of crisis, given Matthew could have accessed Joe and Love’s baby monitor at any time and seen Cary (Travis Van Winkle) and Sherry Conrad (Shalita Grant) imprisoned in the cage below the bakery. Matthew’s alluded technical knowledge would also have allowed him to know that Tesla camera footage can be accessed from several cloud-based applications, making his decision not to check on the Tesla itself dumbfounding. Despite providing an otherwise intriguingly sharp social commentary on relationships in the modern age, Matthew’s bizarre inclusion as a tech CEO (when he could have been anything else) means You season 3 requires audiences to willingly accept the narrative’s blindspots in favor of Joe somehow slipping the proverbial noose again.
