Heavy-duty BEVs like the Tesla Semi won’t work—biofuels a better option: Bill Gates

Bill Gates’ recent article about electrical vehicles contained a variety of interesting insights about his views on electrification. Even though the Microsoft co-founder noticed that EVs present an ideal solution for short-haul traveling, he argued that battery-electric vehicles will likely never be a more sensible solution for heavy-duty machinery like 18-wheelers. This makes vehicles such as the Tesla Semi inherently faulty, at least based on the tech visionary.

Gates explained in his post that EVs do not work as long-haul vehicles such as semitrailers since batteries are big and heavy. According to Gates, this leads to an inherent issue, since moving more fat might need batteries, and much more batteries could result in extra weight. Therefore, even if electricity is drawn from zero-carbon resources, and even with innovations in battery technology, there are just items that batteries wouldn’t be best at.

“The issue is that batteries are big and heavy. The more weight you’re trying to move, the more batteries you will need to power your motor car. However, the more batteries you use, the more money you add–along with the more power you want. In spite of big breakthroughs in battery technology, electrical vehicles will likely never be a sensible alternative for things such as 18-wheelers, cargo ships, and passenger jets. Electricity works when you will need to cover short distances, however we want another solution for heavy, long-haul vehicles,” Gates wrote.

With this in mind, the technology visionary explained that cheap alternative fuels could be a far better option than all-electric vehicles for long-haul traveling. Gates noticed that there are numerous types of these alternative fuels, however he took a particular focus on biofuels and electrofuels. The Microsoft co-founder explained that biofuels nowadays are far different than the biofuels of the previous like ethanol. He added that some biofuels may be attracted from crops that aren’t increased for food, and some may even be utilised in existing engines without requiring any modifications. However, challenges remain with the rollout of biofuels for extended travel.

“I’m positive about these biofuels, but it’s too soon to think about replacing gasoline and other fossil fuels together. Research on innovative biofuels remains underfunded, and they aren’t even ready to be deployed in the scale we want. We are in need of a good deal more invention till they become a sensible, cost-effective solution for long-haul transportation,” the Microsoft co-founder wrote.

Gates also spoke electrofuels, which combine the hydrogen molecules in water using the carbon in carbon dioxide to make a liquid fuel that may work in existing internal combustion engines. According to the technology visionary, electrofuels possess a great deal of potential, but they remain very expensive, costing about 3 to 7 times the price of fossil fuels. The billionaire also noticed for electrofuels to work, the electricity used to make them would want to emerge from zero-carbon resources

Interestingly enough, Gates’ recent article on electrical vehicles did not mention Tesla whatsoever, nor all of the company’s endeavors. That said the technology visionary’s remarks do indicate that he doesn’t feel that the Tesla Semi may be a viable alternative to fossil fuel trucks. Gates’ posture will probably be put to the test soon enough, but since Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated it is time for the Semi’s quantity manufacturing to begin. This implies that Tesla has finalized the specs and design of this Semi, whose creation version will probably meet or even exceed its impressive specs, which were announced over two years back.
