Lucid CEO shares insights on Tesla’s ‘production hell’ and the Nikola controversy

Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson recently shared his thoughts on the electric car market in a meeting using Forbes’ Brooke Crothers. During his conversation with EV veteran, the CEO spoke, among other matters, Tesla’s encounters with “creation hell” and the controversies surrounding hydrogen truck manufacturer Nikola. 

Rawlinson attracted a great deal of headlines lately when he declared that Lucid is really nothing until it has brought its first vehicle, the Air, to manufacturing. In terms of bringing the flagship sedan into manufacturing, the CEO looks very confident that Lucid would have the ability to weather or possibly even prevent the challenges which Tesla confronted during its debilitating Model 3 generation ramp. Based on Rawlinson, Tesla seems to be the only car company that encounters “manufacturing hell. ”

“It’s only one automobile business I know of that experiences generation hell. Toyota puts a brand fresh car into manufacturing many times every year, so does BMW, Mercedes Audi, GM…you never hear of manufacturing hell. It’s most portion of this job. I’t not knowledgeable manufacturing hell. Peter Hochholdinger [Lucid’s Vice President of Manufacturing] has been 25 years at Audi before he united Tesla he’s major manufacturing here. He knows the way to do it I’m enabling him.

“So we’re planning for generation cosmos in which some strategy for creation insanity … It’s not for me to criticize Tesla. However, I’m an observer of the things and I can say practically there’s only one car business that has production hell,” he said. 

When asked about his thoughts on hydrogen startup Nikola and the damning allegations from Hindenburg Research, the Lucid CEO revealed admitted that the situation will not make him quite cross. While Rawlinson didn’t mention Nikola by title, he did highlight that companies that get high valuations using no evidence of the work do a disservice to the electric car motion. Part of this, the CEO admitted, is due to Tesla’s success, which seems to inspire the creation of lots of “wannabe” firms. 

“Because of Tesla’s success, it has spawned a whole phalanx of startup wannabes. And the media can’t discern between them. Plus it makes me quite cross quite that some of these are going to advertise with exorbitant valuations and they have nothing. No technology. I’t never seen any proof of the battery technology. I must know. Part of the repertoire is battery life technology.

“The thing is that a number of these other companies, who really don’t have any do a disservice to this motion. I’m motivated since I want humanity to move into a sustainable mobility version urgently. I believe we can’t wait since the environment is actually suffering,” Rawlinson said. 

For the time being, Rawlinson noticed that Lucid is laser-focused on getting its vehicle manufacturing facility in Casa Grande, Arizona, running and ready for operations. Even the CEO is optimistic about Lucid’so chances, but saying that the robots the firm will use for vehicle production are coming into life. “In two weeks we’ve moved from an object of earth into a factory…nevertheless putting a couple of finishing touches on it. The robots are twitching into life as we speak. We ’re hitting on phase one now,” he said.
