In an announcement on Wednesday, Amazon disclosed it has begun testing a few of its Rivian-made electrical delivery outlets from Los Angeles. The vehicles have been custom-built based on Amazon’s specifications through the EV automakers’ skateboard platform, and are capable of travel 150 miles per charge.

Amazon and Rivian’s electric delivery van job was declared in September 2019, once the e-commerce giant said it would be purchasing 100,000 delivery vehicles in the electrical truck manufacturer as part of its aim to achieve zero net carbon emissions in its performances by 2040, a complete decade ahead of the Paris Agreement. Amazon also established a fund to help accomplish that aim, investing in Rivian as part of its pledge.

At a blog post, Amazon noticed that the deployment of its first Rivian-made all-electric delivery vans is just the beginning. This year, the e-commerce giant intends to test the cars in 15 other cities, ahead of thousands of the vehicles being set up to the road over the next few years. Ross Rachey, Director of Amazon’s Global Fleet and Products, mentioned that the reception into the Rivian-made vans has proven very positive thus far.

“We’re loving the excitement from customers so much –from the photos we see on the internet to the automobile fans who cease our drivers for a firsthand look in the car or truck. By what we’ve seen, this is one of the fastest contemporary commercial electrification programs, also we’re incredibly proud of this,” Rachley stated.

To support the rollout of its first Rivian-made EVs also to get ready for the coming of all the vehicles, Amazon has initiated efforts to build a charging infrastructure because of its own counterparts. Even the e-commerce giant has set up tens of thousands of electrical vehicle charging stations in North America and Europe, and more are planned in the near future.

Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe, for his part, has noticed the EV manufacturer ’s customizable skateboard platform played a huge role in the creation of Amazon’s electric delivery vans. “Rivian’s goal is to deliver goods which the world didn’t have, to redefine expectations through the use of innovation and technology. This milestone is 1 illustration of how Rivian and Amazon are working on the world of 2040, and we expect it motivates other companies to fundamentally change the way they operate,” Scaringe stated.
