Slack is getting Clubhouse-like audio chatrooms, and I absolutely don’t want it!

Clubhouse emerged as an improbable success story throughout the inaugural era with its not-so-unique-but-well-timed sound chatroom feature. And it keeps rising, having raised millions of dollars this season to achieve the coveted unicorn standing . A Bloomberg opinion piece called it that the upcoming social networking star. VICE, on the flip side, pointed out that the unchecked spread of conspiracy theories about the stage. TheVerge’s Casey Newton also wrote a great article about how the absence of content moderation may prove to be Clubhouse’s doom. Going a step farther, Angel investor and Twitch exec Shaan Puri also predicted how Clubhouse will eventually fail. Lofty flattery and scathing criticisms apart, Clubhouse continues to grow and produce buzz.

Imitation is flattery. A billion-dollar company aping a start-up is devastating the contest.

And in the middle of it came the wave of copycats. Or as the civilized people from  Silicon Valley would place it – Imitation is the best form of flattery. Or as a standard, capitalism-hating man would define it – the most demanding trend of a multi-billion dollar company aping a considerably smaller startup and crushing the contest. And just like this, Clubhouse also became the unwilling muse for established social networking giants to mimic. Care to guess that the names of some of these musicians? Facebook? Of course. Twitter? Yep. Even Telegram did it.

Hey Slack, welcome to 3C – that the Clubhouse Copycat Club!

The next in line is Slack. The program millions of individuals use to communicate and collaborate with their teammates working remotely through the world, and to also share terrible jokes and awful happens on virtually any topic imaginable. But mostly, for work. Slack already offers a calling – both voice and video – feature. Thus, why pull out a Clubhouse and put in a sound chatroom feature people can join and leave at their own favor? Well, because a new feature usually doesn’t hurt customers, especially when the service is absolutely free. Also, because good artists copy, fantastic artists steal. The latter would be phrases of Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield, who stated he’s always thought in that doctrine.

During a recent episode of Clubhouse discussion named PressClub that’s hosted by former TechCrunch journalist Josh Constine, Butterfield declared that the organization is constructing a Clubhouse into Slack. And oh, the amusing thing is that Clubhouse CEO Paul Davison was also a part of the session. As a speaker. Coming back to Slack, Butterfield didn’t show much about how the ‘synchronous audio’ thing will be built into the stage, apart from giving us a more vague ‘look out for Clubhouse built into Slack. ’

I DO NOT desire sound chatrooms on Slack

So, we are getting synchronous audio chat rooms on Slack. You can combine them at your will, leave them if you desire, or perhaps speak some words of wisdom if your supervisor thinks you’re worthy of the chance. Or, should you happen to be the boss hosting that talk session. The idea sounds good on paper. However, what’s the real point of it? Your weekly or daily team meetings occur during Zoom or Google Meet, where teammates get to find each others’ faces, strategy a few things, talk about a few laughs, and return to work. Following that, Slack is in which text-based communication occurs throughout the day. In my case, around the clock!

Until I use Dave Chappelle and Kevin Hart, I’m not willing to join a chatroom on Slack

So, why do I need to leap right into a sound chatroom with my coworkers that isn’t crucial for work? Yes, I would love to shield how Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a comedic masterpiece. And a cargo boat that brought a man genitalia path before getting stuck at the Suez Canal and interrupted 10% of the world’s trade flows throughout the waterway is the sort of modern world problem the likes of Edison and Tesla couldn’t’ve imagined. But events like these happen rarely, and therefore, the demand for sound chatrooms to get into a chaotic conversation with coworkers, with whom you already chat more than work and share memes five days each week, doesn’t make much sense. 

Zoom and Meet video calls are sufficient. Why jump on a Slack sound chatroom?

Our weekly Google Meet video chats have kept getting shorter over the years, because video conferencing fatigue is a real thing. And that’s not just me saying. The investigators at Stanford consider that too, and journalists at reputed media houses such as TheWashingtonPost have even doled out invaluable advice on the best way to handle Zoom exhaustion .

An individual might argue that using a sound chatroom feature might come in handy if you truly need it. And I agree, especially if I had been a Slack product style executive who wanted to keep expanding the stage and get more customers hooked on it. However from a regular remote worker’s perspective, I’d rather use services such as Telegram, Discord, or even Google Meet we’ve grown used to using for leaping right into a team call along with my teammates. And that also, just when it’s really important, or interesting. Until thenI’ll just play my preferred Chilled Cow mix and operate in peace!
