Starbucks, Amazon, Pepsi among 400+ companies calling for Equality Act to pass

More than 400 large businesses have collectively said they need to see that the Equality Act passed. The legislation would expand civil rights protections to LGBTQ folks in the US.

The companies concerned have joined the lsquo;Business Coalition for its Equality Act’, setup from Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

The Equality Act was passed by the House of Representatives at March. But , it faces a tougher fight to be passed by the Senate, which will be divided equally between Democrats and Republicans.

One Democratic Senator, West Virginia’s Joe Manchin III, has already indicated he might not encourage the Act, which alone could scupper its opportunities.

Household title companies to sign until the coalition (which was first introduced in 2016 but has risen steadily in the last five decades ), include Apple, Airbnb, Amazon, PepsiCo, General Motors, CVS, Facebook, Marriott, Capital One, Starbucks, Domino’s Pizza, Tesla, Pfizer, and Home Depot. They think the Act is going to be good for business and is the ideal thing to do.

“We are seeing rising help from industry leaders since they understand the Equality Act is fantastic for their employees, good for their companies and good for our nation,’ said HRC President Alphonso David at a statement.

The 416 business at the coalition employ over 14.6 millions Americans and have a combined revenue of over $6.8 trillion.

“Employers care about their employees’ capability to rent an apartment, send their children to college, take a look at the dentist, also also pick up the groceries free of discrimination,” continuing David.

“They recognize when LGBTQ employees and their relatives are guarded in their daily lives, it gets them more secure and confident in their tasks, and also more productive. ”

Right now, 29 states deficiency nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ individuals.

The Equality Act was debated in Congress earlier but has repeatedly failed when it came in front of the Senate.

Though a lot of corporates have voiced backing for its Equality Act, the number of big businesses pledging support throughout the HRC has doubled in the past couple of years.

“Dow was a proud supporter of the Equality Act since it was introduced; and we keep advocating for the entire inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in the eyes of law enforcement,” said Louis Vega, President, Dow North America, another of the Coalition members.

“It’s no time that civil rights protections are extended to LGBT+ individuals nationwide on a clear, consistent, and comprehensive foundation,” said Carla Grant Pickens, Global Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer by IBM.

This isn’t the first time HRC has turned to large business for support. In 2015 it helped convince 380 firms to sign an Amicus Brief into the Supreme Court, asking it to pass marriage equality.
