Tesla Model X spotted equipped with LiDAR sensors in the wild

A Tesla Model X equipped with LiDAR detectors was seen in Los Altos California last week. Teslarati reader William Conner shared photos of the Model X after reading the article concerning the Tesla Model Y observed sporting similar gear. Another writer, Tyler Wellman, seen the Model Y in Santa Cruz, CA while biking to work.

As mentioned in the prior article, these sightings aren’t the very first time that the Tesla automobile has been seen with LiDAR detectors. A Model S was seen with a sensor package in Palo Alto back in July. A Model 3 has been viewed using comparable gear in the wild.

Based on the sightings, its sounds that Tesla has a group of S3XY cars armed with sophisticated imaging equipment, including what seems to be many Luminar Hydra LiDAR units. Elon Musk has been open about his view LiDAR in connection with autonomous vehicles. As such, the Tesla community might be more than just a little puzzled by a Model X and Model Y athletic LiDAR gear.

Back in September, @DDotJ discovered a patent that might explain the current Model X and Model Y sighting. “In various embodiments, a machine learning model trained using auxiliary detector data can accurately predict the result of an auxiliary sensor without needing the bodily auxiliary sensor.

Probably this: https://t.co/Gx4LcCJ5BxTesla employs a rig with radar and lidar to gather training data and generate a ground truth to confirm their 3D estimation NNs. I'm assuming Tesla is likely exceeding their 3D distance estimation methods for the rewrite. pic.twitter.com/WTTbxeido4

“For example, training vehicles can be equipped with auxiliary sensors…such as collecting training data. The training data can then be employed to prepare a machine learning model for predicting the consequence of an auxiliary sensor, including radar, LiDAR, or another detector,” the patent study.

Twitter consumer @DDotJ speculated that Tesla might use the LiDAR sensors to confirm its 3D distance quote systems. Tesla released its limited FSD beta late October, also Musk has noticed that a couple more revisions to the advanced driver-assist system would have to be implemented before releasing it to more ancient access members. The recent sightings imply that Tesla might be conducting ground truthing, or perhaps gathering more data for Autopilot and Full Self-Driving’s broader release.
